Ok, I am from Alabama been fishing here for awhile and I noticed you guys got a name for a trout I am not use to hearing. First I noticed you have whiting is that what people from LA,MS,AL and FL call white trout? White trout are silver in color caught throughtout the bays and waterways and if you goto a shallow rig 5 miles out they can get as large as speckled trout. They are good in taste back home and are the norm when it comes to panfish thats usually fried.
Next, anyone ever heard of a ground mullet aka southern kingfish? Its really not a mullet, but I caught one and a guy was like oh that a (whatever he said) and i'm like no its a ground mullet buddy.

First fish picture is a whiting. Very common in the surf. There are more than one species here, but everything is lumped into "whiting".
Second picture is a sand trout. Or a silver sea trout, depending on where you caught it. Inshore and the beach, it is a sand trout. Farther offshore, it is a silver sea trout.
The biggest difference is the pigment patch on the tongue. One has orange color that goes across the whole surface of the tongue, the other only has the orange around the margin of the tongue.
Technically, sand trout Cynoscion arenarius, silver sea trout Cynoscion nothus. Sand trout are far more common for most fisherman. O.K. to eat, so long as you get them on ice quickly, as they don't keep as well as spotted sea trout. Don't put them in the freezer, as they turn very mushy. Same for silver sea trout, fresh only. |

The silver trout that you call white trout are called gulf trout in Texas. There are three species of kingfish found in Texas. They are the northern kingfish (king whiting), the southern kingfish (sea mullet), and the gulf kingfish (gulf whiting). They are usually referred to collectively as "whiting". _________________ certified whiting slayer |

Sorry CS, you have already demonstrated you have an I.Q. greater than anyone here is this forum...and anyone outside the Bluff for that matter. I am vigorously petitioning Tyler to have you removed immediately.

Would you believe that I am a true "Bluffian", so much so, I was born at the Naval Hospital way back when the hospital was located where the expanded golf course resides now on base. Graduated from FB High too!!! Sad part is, I don't own a single pair of white shrimp boots, BUT I have been seen in HEB without shoes on. |
