| I saw the previous discussion on tires and it's obvious that BFG ATs are the most popular choice. Right now I am running Goodyear ATS on a Suburban and they are OK but it just seems a little tougher than it ought to be to get through the deep soft sand. Has anyone used both the BFG and the Goodyears who could provide a comparison? Also, I would appreciate any input on the relatively new TRXUS STS radials. These are touted as being sand tires, but I would like to hear some first hand experience as to how they do on PINS and on the highway. Thanks. |

The BFG All-Terrain T/AŽ KO tire is about the best beach / road tire you can get. Realtively quite with good road wear life and great on the sand.
The Interco STS tires are noisy and rough on the road and a little too agressive on the sand. I have these tires on my F250 in a 33 x 12.5 x 16.5 size. I got them only beacuse I was hauling a slide-in camper and needed the higher load limit these "E" rated tires offer. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

Have you tried to adjust your air pressure? I find this much more important than the tread pattern. Run less air and your truck will not have to work as hard and you will not dig deep trenches. In my light toyota I tend to drive with a tire up in between the trenches and float along on top of the sift sand running some 33x12.5 tires at 15 psi. Not that your saburban will be able to perform that manuver but you won't be constantly digging yourself out of a hole to move forward with full tires. For me that is half my street pressure. And added advantage is a hard full of air tire is more likely to be punctured than one with less air in it. This may seem counter intuitive but think about it conforming over a sharp piec of debris buries in the sand rather than staying round and forcing the trucks weight on a single stress point on a hard tire.
I save gas, tires and wear on the truck this way. |
