Get a new truck then! A Ford F-150 or a Hummer comes to mind! Not one of them cheesey GMC H1 Yuppie go carts, GET A REAL HUMMER or a Ford!

Breaking down on PINS is surely one of the major concerns anyone has when heading down there. Being prepared is one of the best strategies. CBs are commonly used on PINS. Channel ONE for many and the Rangers monitor certain channels as well. Good preventative maintenance on your vehicle and knowing it are essential. Carrying tools, fluids, fuses, a spare belt or two --especially SERPENTINE belts should be on-hand for down beach driving. Travel with a friend or know who will be down there and who to contact just in case.

Hec fish, you have to have confidence in your truck. If you are afriad it will beak down then you have to get another truck or work to regain the trust in the one you have. Being prepared is the best way but you have to trust your equipment.

Start out slow again. check your truck over before each trip. prepare as if it is going to break down and see if you can regain the trust. If you cannot then you have no choice but to replace it.

My old black truck (93 Ford f-150) was the perfect beach truck, that is until it dumped all of the oil out on the way back. It was with a mechenic for a week and no explation could be found. It has 200k on it and used maybe one quart between changes.

I lost trust in it and now it has been sold. I did not put it here because of what it did. I am not that good of a mech to put another engine in.

Just some ideas

Cliff

I feel your pain. I got stuck as bad as you can get (several here saw it) last July 15. I haven't been back. Yet. I have a brand new truck and I'm hesitant to take it on the beach, but I feel myself giving in. Hey, it was brand new last October. It ain't brand new anymore! Laughing

Buy a Dodge. I have a 2003 Durango, and never had any trouble with it going up and down.

Everyone has their prefernce though, but the most important thing is to properly maintain you vehicle, and check all your fluids and hoses just like you would before a road trip.

I'd hate to be the one to put the last nail in the coffin but everyone is right. Your choices are either get a newer truck, fix the one you have, and most importantly, be able to do more than basic maintanence to your vehicle. I wouldn't rely on others for help for it may take a few hours for help to arrive.
Additionally carry a CB. I just bought one a few months ago just for that purpose.
Lastly, try not to go to far alone. I drive to the 15-20 alone, but I let my fishing buddies know where I'll be. Any farther I am sure to go in a caravan with other trucks.

Unfortuanately the options in this sport are usually not cheap.

I remember your killer truck buried that time. I was in my Toyota about 5 miles south of you and almost did the same thing(after 25 years of PINS driving). I still remember driving off the beach that day and seeing the little tow truck that was coming to get you. Don't worry brother, you probably won't get stuck for another 20 years.
later,
EC

P.S. If you have anything heavier than a Toyota, air down to 20 PSI as soon as you hit the sand..

Seriously. Get a rig you can have confidence in. THere are no garantees but depndability and capability of the truck you take down will go a long way towards many trouble free trips. Nothing is worse than being stuck..other than being stuck alone Shocked

In addition to a good rig and a practiced driver tools and equipment for repairs and recovery need to be well thought out and packed EVERY time. Regardless of how few miles you plan on going.

How many here have tried to change a tire in the sand with a stock jack?? It's not fun.

Go To Tractor Supply(it's cheaper than truck shops) and buy one of these. http://www.4by4connection.com/48.html
A 48" Hi-lift and a 2x2' sheet of 3/4" plywood will go along ways.

A small air compressor(or other inflation source) and a plug kit may keep you from having to use the above jack.

at least 20' of closed eye strap (no hooks, I won't use them with metal hooks) and a solid place to attach it to the front and back of your rig)

A CB.. how ya going to get somebody to help you or be able to help someone out who isn't that far away?

Beer (this is beach currency)

IF your rig uses fluids or has mechanical issues either be prepared to deal with it in the worst possible environment to work on a vehicle or ride with a buddy.

Don't forget a shovel. If anything it's required around camp.

a quite weekday is my favorite time to drive and fish PINS. It is also the last place and time I would go alone if I had any doubts about my equipment.

With any vehicle the most important thing is doing a proper PM, with a good inspection you won't have to carry spare parts. The things that can be inspected visually such as u-joints, belts, bearings on all your engine "hang ons" such as a/c compressor, alt. power steering pump and water pump, idlers and hoses, these are items that just dont crap out in an instant catch it before it does. It doesnt matter the make of vehicle they all break down, treat it right, dont beat it, PM it and go have fun
