I'm about to get a new rod and reel for speckled trout and redfish. I'm thinking of this combo.

I'm confident the reel will serve my purposes, but I'm not positive about the rod.

Honestly, I'd rather buy something locally, but this would be a killer price if the rod is worth messing with.

IM-8 graphite blank, cork grip, guides are ok...id get it. i have 2 bass pro rods and the only problem ive had is the rings inside the guides fell out on a couple of guides. maybe it was just the rods that i had. it wasnt that much of a problem to me cause i can fix it Cool
the 4000 sahara with the 7'M rod sounds pretty good to me

Thanks mando. Another member here recommended the reel and a 7' M rod to me, and I did a search. So it looks like there's more than one person around here who likes that sort of combo.

I have the bait casting version of that rod in M-H action. I love it. Stronger than you think and will not tire you out.

The blanks are a bit heavy in my opinion. I prefer lighter rods with more sensitivity. I have two of these rods and I have had the same problem with the guides. The inserts tend to chip very easily. I have replaced two guides on one rod and the tip on the other.

I really don't like the way the grip feels on the rods. For baitcasting at least. You might not have a problem with the spinning outfit.

Its a great deal but I would coose to buy a better rod and reel combo if you will be doing extensive fishing with this combo. If its going to be just a bait rod or an extra rod in the boat. Go For It....

I think the Sahara Spinning reel sells for 59.99 at Academy. You can get a nice All star rod for around 100 bucks.

I have a couple of Bionic blade and the cadilac Pro Qualifier rods. I love them. I can feel the perch nibble the legs off a shrimp under an Alameda Rattle.

Just an update. I got a rod that felt good to me today for $15 at Wal-Mart on Greenwood. It's a Fin-Nor Powerlight Custom Trout/Redfish Special. Very lightweight compared to anything else they had there, and a nice feel too. It might suck, but if it lasts me this weekend I won't have lost any money.

They have some medium-light IM-6 American All-Star rods there for $15 as well, but I didn't want anything quite that "soft".

I then went to Academy for the Sahara 4000 reel. They were sold out, so I asked if I could buy the one on display. It had no box, docs, or the extra spool, so I was able to get it for $39.00.

I'm gonna use this rig this weekend and see how I like it. I may still order the combo from BPS just so I'll have the extras that come with the reel and a spare setup.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me with their opinions. You guys are great!

I have an Offshore Angler rod that is designed for trout and red fishing that I got from Basspro a few years ago called an Inshore Extreme that I have been very happy with and that my 17 year old daughter has inherited. As someone else posted, the blank is just a little heavier than I like. It is fairly sensitive, but not as sensitive as I'ld like.

You might want to consider investing just a little more and get a Billystix spinning rod-they are awesome! I have one and now my daughter wants one. Billy sells them for about $175 and if you post on www.southtexasfishing.net as well as here (I love this board) Billy will give you a $25 discount on the rod. There are chances for a freebie too.

I also have a couple of other bass pro rods whih I have retired because I didn't care for them.

Well, I didn't get the BPS rod. I got an inexpensive rod to get me going, and I'll upgrade to a better rod later.

I'm still spending money on waders, tackle, and a kayak. I just want to get in the water and wet lines right now. I'll worry about a better rod later. Those Billystix rods look awesome, but Molly looks even better.

Thanks for the link to the other site. I just registered there.
