I was reading up about fish and suff and came around this one. "BONY-TONGUE FISH" It has a head/body just like a tarpon but has a tail like a gar or triple-tail. These monsters also live in freshwater. Africa has some wild fish! check out the NILE PERCH, it looks like a super bass!!!

Mando, that fish is called an "Arowana", as a kid we would buy them at Wal-Mart, They would have and egg like sac to them at first, and wouldnt feed for about 2 weeks, Soon we found out our tank kept getting smaller and the fish bigger. And had to feed him live gold fish.

That damn fish would always jump out of the tank , and thats how it ended his life one night... The fish would always swim at the top of the tank, i dont ever recall it swimming to the bottom for anything, all in all it grew about 14 inches long before he kill himself

I have never seen them at any pet store since, guess we got lucky to find that one.,

It was such a neat fish we stuck him in the freezer after he died and showed our family . hehe.

In the 1970's, TPWD and SARA stocked tarpon into Braunig Lake here in San Antonio.

Check out the Texas Freshwater Records...you'll see that there is a listing for Tarpon:

Tarpon 10.12lbs 37" 08/06/86 Braunig Lake Paul Willette

I always thought that was interesting...They've also tried Nile Perch:

At some point in time Texas Parks and Wildlife were considering importing the Nile Perch and planting them much like they did with the Orange Mouth Corvina in Calaveras and Braunig. I don't know what came of that.

They did...and there are still people who supposedly catch/find fish that they are unsure of what they are. I remember someone reported a floater a while back and they couldn't identify it. Sounded just like a big Nile Perch.

I believe Canyon Lake here North of San Antonio still has a population of Walleye.

I caught one in the castnet when I was about 9yrs old, which was in 1992.

I haven't heard anything about them in a while.

be cool is if they would stock Peacock bass in Cally and Braunig since they are both warm water lakes. Now I'll quit daydreaming and ge back to work.

at the fish store. I think on Mcardle. I waqs going to put it in my pond in my back yard. The guy at the pet store said they are illegal in Texas. Something about introduced species. I used to buy them at walmart incalifornia all the time for like 4 bucks each. Cool fish and they got pretty big in a 100 gallon tank. It was funny to watch them smack a goldfish you would dangle in by the tail.

Actually, the fish is an arapaima. It is in the same family as the arawana. It is the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world. It gulps air from the surface just like a gar. It reaches lengths of 10' and weights over 600 lbs.

Yea man, if you can find one Mando, it's well worth the five bucks to buy it.
just be prepared to keep buying larger tanks and plenty of goldfish.
