|
|
Is wintertime SURF trout fishing the same as it is in the bay? Or am I missing something? I lost one good trout my last time down, 22"+ easily, and it was on a finger mullet. Now that the mullet are probably gone, I wouldn't know what to use to target the silver girls.
Slow lures that hang in the water? Corkie, Mirrolure, etc?
I read about big surf trout in the early parts of the year, like Capt. Billy's big new years trout, etc...and I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.
Thanks for the help.

But now that I can catch the pompano and it looks like they are gone for wahile I would like to know how to catch the trout as well. I have heard that they are caught in the first or wade gut and many times you do not even need to get wet to catch them? Anyway this board has helped me with so much already I can't wait to find out what the trick is here as well.
I need to know everything down to water conditions. Thanks guys and sorry for jumping on your thread but I will be watching this one closely.

Not a problem.
The biggest two that have been seen by me were 25" and 24.5", which aren't 'Big Girls' by a lot of people's standards.
The 25" was caught in the summer with a silver kastmaster spoon by my step-bro, and the 24.5" was caught in November with a live mullet on a spider weighted rig.
The one I lost was in early December on a live mullet, free lined. It was good sized, but I can't speculate too much as I lost it in a breaker about 10 ft in front of me.
All fish were caught between the first and second sand bars.
However, we have caught a lot of trout in the wade gut...and I would assume that this is where they are 'sitting' when Capt. Billy locates them.
Take care

last year I think I was only able to go once due to work and the fact that you don't get many days that are suitable. Sort of like the pompano. It is best when it is green. Look for holes and closeouts, or places like Fish Pass Jetty but fish deeper, Chest deep sometimes and fish S-L-O-W-L-Y with 51 m's, corkies or catch 2000. Better yet call up dad aka Captain Billy Sandifer, and book him for a winter trip. He's the master. Again the problem is finding the right day, then it is still hard to do. It is not like summertime fishing where you look for birds or bait in the wade gut. They fight like cold logs when you get them and they aren't everywhere.

| Like tyler said you have to fish slow. Even though you think you are fishing slow it probably isn't slow enough. If using a spinning reel it takes about 2-3 seconds for one turn of the handle. I've had the best luck with 51m's fished in the wade gut. I've been out with Capt Billy a couple of times and once was for winter trout, money well worth it as I learned a lot from him. You have to move a lot and fish lots of different colors until you find the one they are hitting. |
