I know I'd be waiting in line for that book, for sure!
I've never had the oppurtunity to speak with him, although I have given and received several 'waves' and 'salutes' as he drove by me down the beach, or vice versa. This year is my first ever fishing the surf, with NO experience before this year. I feel I've learned a lot, and could only imagine the knowledge held by someone with the experience like Capt. Sandifer.
I plan to book a trip with him next year. Maybe I can catch a few scary stories.
Take care

I was not allowed to join the military because I had polio as a kid. I sure wanted in on the subs though, I would have joined and voluntiered in a heart beat. My dad was in the Army. The 2nd Ranger Battalion in WWII, he was a Captain so you know about his deal. He served in Europe and made it to Berlin, after that he was sent to Tinian with his and 2 other companies to watch over Little Boy and Fat Man. He ended up with a Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, Legion of Merit w/ 2 Gold clusters, 2 Purple Hearts and a French Metal of Honor with Gold Cluster. I don't remember the real name of that French metal but thats what it meant in English. He was buried in Houston National Cemitary in 1972. There were more old Rangers there than there are Texas Rangers in Texas. They had a deal where they would see each other off if possible. What a sight to see buddy.
You must have pissed somebody off to be sent to Quang Tri. I heard that place was hell on earth. Glad you made it ok. If I'm not mistaken a friend of mine from the old Bob Hall Pier got it in Quang Tri, His name was Danny Johnson and went to Ray High School here in Corpus. He was a Tarpon catching fool and a great guy.
I'm going to go find some grub for lunch.
Good luck and take care, Mike "Hip" Sowden |

Hey, this is a great tread! I love all the stories. Have to say I don’t know what ryan saw, my guess is the drug running thing, but agree that is to fast for a boat. The links that Torpedo gave where good stories too.
As for the camel picture, it’s a good fake. 1 the camel has no shadow like the plastic looking antenna 2 if it is what the person was taking a picture of, it's not centered, all though the antenna is 3 there is an outline around the camel, especially around the head 4 there is a gray patch just to the left of the camel? 5 the feet go blurry. Not to say there isn’t or has never been a camel on the island.
I forgot who wrote about the 26 year old carrier Capt., but I can say it a little far fetch. I was enlisted in the Navy, and serviced on 2 carriers (CVN71 IKE & CVN69 Roosevelt) although not an officer, I know you have to be a pilot, and have had to serve for many years, in a lot of positions before you can Capt. a carrier.
I been out on PINS many time, but never have gone all the way to the Mansfield Jetties, or seen anything strange. I seen many things out there, rabbits, cocottes, junk and trash that the wind carries. On cold nights with a full moon you can see this large ring around the moon? I’d like to know what causes that. On nights without any moon you can see so many stars, make out the Milky Way, and see meteor streak by.
Now for my story, it’s not as good, but it’s a warning for being prepared. One day back in ’86 a friend and I wanted to go fishing. It was going to be a hot midweek school day. We loaded his truck for a one day fishing trip, rods and reels, tackle box, cooler of ice, bottle of water, and a lunch. Figuring we had what we needed, we headed for some breakfast, then stopped by a bait shop on the KCW. We pickup some bait, and I bought a soda. After ateing breakfast I couldn’t finish the soda and tossed a still half full can. Just before head down we stop and gassed up the truck. All looked good, as we got there and off the last bit of black top. There where a few people but not many, and we wanted to be as far south as we could get. After passing the 4x4 sign we continued I guess for about an hour. Sure that there wasn’t a person all round for miles and the sand getting a bit softer, we stopped, not being in a 4x4. We fished for hours catching many hardheads, and a few good keeper reds. We ate your now moist sandy sandwiches. Afterward we fished a little more and came up empty. It was getting late and it was time to go. Things started off okay, we where not stuck, and the fish where on ice. All of a sudden there was a hey, hey, hey, hey, then thug, thug, thug, thug! then nothing. The truck had thrown the only belt it has and it overheated. It was getting dark, and we where ready for a shower and bed. We waited for it to cool down, and then used the last bit of water to replace what had steamed out. We drove for about 2 to 5 minutes at a time only making a mile or so before the needle on the temp gauge would start rising. Not wanting to lose any more water we had to stop and wait again. After a few hours of that, we knew we where going to stay the night. The next morning brought more of the same and a hunger I’ll never forget. Hour after hour went by and nobody came by to help. Things started look real bad, we where out of food and water. I then remembered the can of soda and how even a hot flat coke would be nice. We tried rope, string, and pantyhose (just in case it was from a girlfriend of his). Believe it or not the pantyhose worked the best, they stay together long then anything, but we didn’t make it all the way back. Getting pass the 4x4 sign we knew we where getting closer, and thirstier. Then came the 2nd night, this time we continued with slow progress. By day break, we had made it to some guys fishing a few miles south of the entrance to the park. These guys where nice enough to give us some food, water, and a tow to the gate, where we called for help. We asked a friend to bring some food, water, a belt and tools. I need to say push starting even a little Toyota on the beach isn’t any fun. _________________ even a bad day of fishing beats a great day at work |

Quang Tri wasn't bad for me because it was a gig with the Seabees (MCB 11), who'd been there for ages and rotated back two months after I joined them. The only time we got shot at was the morning we caught the Freedom Bird in Da Nang. Learned only recently just how lucky that really was; we'd exited 2 weeks before the Tet Offensive. When the batallion headed in-country again, I was the lone corpsman assigned to a detail that went to rebuild a Marine base in Okinawa, and then on another mission to Guam. By that time, December '69, they were ready to decommission the battalion, and they let almost everyone in it put on their civies, including me with 6 months still to go on my enlistment. A month later, I enrolled as a junior at College Station, along with a ton of other vets.
Dad was a Chief Aviation Metalsmith who retired after 26 1/2 years. I was born in a Naval hospital in Seattle and turned in my dependent's ID card when I enlisted in '66. I used to joke we'd put in 30 years in the Navy together, one way or the other. He was stuck in the sick bay at North Island Naval Station while I was going to corps school at Balboa Naval Hospital across the bay at San Diego, so I used to go check him out of there on weekends and go fishing with him off the Coronado Islands. I caught my first halibut on one of those trips, something Dad hadn't ever done at the time, and he just couldn't resist pulling it out of the burlap sack the crew stuck it in so he could get a better look. He tried to lip it like a bass, and it punched 4 holes through his thumbnail. On many trips later to Alaska, he more than got even with the species, though. I sure wish he still around to sock it to the pompano, his favorite fish. |

This thread is fun!
Just spent the last 20 min. reading it.
Growing up we used to drive up to the Mansfield cut and shoot coyotes in the dunes.Plus scare the crap out of illegals.Basicly being teenage a-holes.
Lots of lead flew.
As far as supernatural goes I've had a couple of experiences that can probably be explained but it's fun to carry them around in my head.
Driving up from South Padre Island to mansfield one pretty foggy night we passed some guy walking south.Had on long pants,no shoes or shirt.Very pale skin.He did'nt even acknowledge us.We drove about another mile and someone said we should go ask if he needs help.So we turned around and drove much farther than he could have walked in that amount of time and could'nt find him.Spooked us pretty good.Did'nt see any cars all the way up and he was only 4 or 5 miles from the jettie.
Another time spending the weekend on the north side of the cut we drunkenly decided to go for a night surf(creepy enough just doing that but it's fun).We walked over to a couple of camps to be sure there were no lines out and give people a heads up that we'd be in the water for a bit(got some strange looks).
After a few min. out I stuck the nose of my board in the water and took a pretty good tumble. The water was only about waist deep so I just stood up.I looked over to my left and someone was standing about 10 feet from me.Pretty dark so it was mostly silhouette but there was someone definetly in the surf.I just figured it was my friend so I said "did you see me eat it just now?".
Then I turned to the right and saw the silhouette of my friend against someones campfire standing up on his board headed away from me about 30 feet off.
When I turned back no one was there.
It really scared me pretty bad so I went in and drank myself to sleep.
Probably nothing but it's fun to tell those stories to kids around campfires so they have a hard time sleeping."hehehe" _________________ "If you love something let it go.If it comes back to you gaff it and throw it in the icechest."

Who would not become "creeped out," to have many sleepless nights, and slowly fall into the abyss of insanity, having learned that the hitchhiker you picked up last night was found to have died many years before? To unearth this ground-breaking legend is ghoulishly spooky!

When I was a patrol officer working night shift I used to listen to that show during the slow hours. They have some real nutcases on there. When Art Bell retired, George Noory took over and kept up the same nutcase level of expertise, LOL. It's weird, growing up in the woods of east Texas, I spent years hunting the woods and many nights in the woods and never really saw anything to "spook" me. Over the last 20 years, on the beach, where you have the greatest visibility ever, I've seen a couple of things that had me in "defense" mode and spooked the crap out of me. I don't believe in ghosts, hobgoblins, aliens, etc.. _________________ B-Bill
