Obsessed and I hit PINS late Saturday morning. The weather was nice and the driving (low tide) was awesome. On the way down, at the 20mm, we came across a camp site that had an arsenal set up of reels. Just down the beach we could see the guys walking back to camp with a shark just behind them. I paid no mind since we where in a hurry to get to our spot to fish. As I pass the shark I noticed it was not no ordinary shark, and it was rather large. I didn't want to question the guys and bother them so I jumped out of the truck and took a quick picture and headed on down the beach.
9'+ Mako shark, gotta love it!! (there is a story behind the shark, but that's another topic, by somebody else).
We ran into Oz, Curmit, Moose, and Old Salt in the 40's and told them about the Mako. Moose and Old Salt went to check it out, and Oz and Curmit where heading south to fish "the spot" for sharks. We all ended up at the Mansfield Jetty's, and the surf was just the way we hoped it would be.
Oz and Curmit went to their "spot" to catch sharks, Obsessed and I tackled the surf.
Obsessed was the first to snag a keeper
Then I landed one
Later that night, Curmit came by camp and told us about a rattle snake on the jetty's that Oz came across earlier that afternoon. I grabbed my flash light and followed Curmit to the last known location. We found him about 20' from where Oz had marked the spot. I grabbed the tail and Curmit pinned the head down with a flounder gig. Unharmed, (the snake and us) I took it back to camp. I got back to camp and Obsessed was looking in the back of his truck for something. I walked up behind him and asked, "Hey, can you take a picture of this?" He turned around and saw the snake in his face and liked to soil his shorts...lol.
The next morning, Oz came to our camp to release the snake and take some pictures of it.
After that excitement, my 535 starts to scream! I set the hook and the fight was on. I get the fish into the wade gut, Obsessed wades out to leader it in and a large dorsal fin appears. Cool, it looked like a sandbar shark, I have yet to land on yet. As the fish gets closer to shore, The fin disappears and a red fish comes aground. It's a nice red at that, 45", my personal best by 3"!! Cool
I guess the shark was chasing my red, no telling, bummer.
Soon after Pictures and a release, Obsessed's casted rod goes off, He brings in this nice red.
Then my rod goes off again..another red
Then my rod goes off again..yet another red
Then Obsessed's rod goes off, this time a nice little shark
The rest of the night, we had all four yakked shark rods go off with no hookups. one of my leaders was bitten through 700# test mono, with the hooks licked clean. Luckily the long line clip to my steel drops got tangled up with the weight and I brought the whole rig back in, in two pieces!!
After a night of LS and tainted fruit, we woke up to a mass assault of pelicans. We could not keep a line out at all without catching one of these vicious long billed feathered teradacterals!!
after giving up on surf fishing, we decided to throw a couple lines out off the rocks before we headed home. My 535 had a nice run with a section of bluefish for bait, but no hook up. Shortly after, the 535 gets hit again. Turns out to be a 32" red.
After that, we headed to camp to pack up and make that long journey home.
We caught a few more reds that we did not take pictures off due to it was getting kinda old.
I ended up with two more flat tires, three holes in one tire, and two in the other.
That's about it, until next time.

Great report Bruce, remind me not to follow your tire tracks if I ever follow you down. You seem to find the nails, even at low tide....
See ya on the sand,
