I want thank you all for the great knowledge and reports you all post. I lived in Corpus Christi many years ago (12 to be exact). My name is Joe Dusek and I fished Big Shell a few times in my life with my Dad and some with friends back in the day. Since then my dad/mom have moved off and I did as well.
My career as taken my many places including many stints overseas; but now I have been living happily in Austin for the past couple of years. In my current job, I meet couple of guys that like to fish as much as I do and we starting fishing (bass only around here; Hate it). But then I started setting up deep sea trips through Texas Charter Fleet. In any case we had great trips offshore fishing but we wanted more saltwater fishing than four trips a year. So my friend and I bought a boat so we could fish the bay in the good spots. Learned a lot and had fun but still needed more.
I found this site about PINS and it immediately intrigued my interest, thinking about days gone past. So my buddies and I decided we need to try Surf fishing. I had nothing left from days in the past and my buddies never had anything. So a quick a trip to Academy in Austin we had some gear. Not much, I mind you; since they do not cater to Surf fishing. We went down and had a great time catching sharks, redfish, and whiting (all released except for some whiting we used for cut bait). We had such a good time, we decided to make this a regular trip much as possible (except sleeping on the beach, I had sand and a rash on my body that I never want again!!). Two month later we came down again, the fishing was not as good because of the surf being so high. This was a bummer since I bought a 6/0 and my buddy bought a 9/0 (just to piss me off) and we rented a kayak to try and catch a big shark. It was so rough; we did not even attempt to put the big rods out. All that did not matter, since we had such a good time, being with friends, drinking cold frosty’s and catching a few fish. So here is where my story takes “I Think” turn. We have plans to come down to PINS a lot now (including Billy’s annual clean the beach) and I am not happy with my current rigs. I start surfing the web and buying poles and reels like they are last ones on earth but it makes me happy. Mind you I live in Austin so not much to buy around here. I spend hundreds on tackle and another 6/0 reel. Then I read a report from “Hereford” about OZ and Johnny French switching leaders because they are having better success rate with mono shark leaders. I just spent over $200 on cable shark leaders. I say dam. Now I have everything but that; and whatever post on this board next.
Sorry for my rambling, however; I want to thank all of you for you post; especially, Tyler, Johnny French, OZ, Nick, and I know I forgot a few. By the way here is a picture of my rigs thanks to this site.

Nice looking collection. I notice some examples of the "if one is good, two must be better" syndrome. |

You are welcome! You are now addicted. The number of rigs proves it!
For added fun visit Nick's Breakaway tackle shop on the island next time you are down and look at the LDX rod. That will be the finest in your collection. That is coming from another salt addicted fishing rod enthusiast and owner of three Breakaway rods. |

You guys are making it really hard to resist buying an LDX. Then I will have to go buy a reel that does it justice. I live in the Austin area as well, but my arsenal has now expanded to 3 pomp targeted rigs and two large critter rigs. I don't need more! Somebody make it stop. |

There is not a cure except to quit. Then the salt and sand levels drop and you start to go through withdrowals. You will not find any kind of fishing that matches the surf. It is the best. Have fun and enjoy.

If you find a cure, don't tell my wife. New additions this year:
$30,000 boat - the old one was ok but....
New trolling motor
a few new reels- maybe more then a couple
atleast a couple of new rods 7' to 14'
oh nearly forgot new 4 wheel drive truck- it has already been to PINS and heading to the deer lease
What a good wife I have.. _________________ FISH ON |
