The thread of the sticky "Petition Prelims" on Tyler's website has produced another item worthy of attention:
"Let us know how and where to contribute to the bumper stick campaign. I can not give the time, but can donate to the cause. I'll even buy a bunch and hand them out."
Any ideas on the bumper sticker's content, financing, and distribution?
Claude was so burnt out by the endless email on the subject that he asked to be dropped from the BORG recently, but he obviously hasn't given up the fight. Give 'em what they deserve, Claude.

Zero thinking
It was only by accident on March 21 that the editorial "Pedestrian beach is idea whose time has come" popped up on the computer screen.
The editorial contends, "to create economic activity on the island that will raise the tax base. And raising the tax base is to the advantage of all of Corpus Christi's citizens"
The publisher, editors, writers, and reporters at the Caller-Times have demonstrated an abysmal ignorance of economics. Even more problematic is the paper's resistance to learning anything about the subject. The word should be excluded from the organization's lexicon.
If anybody there had a clue as to what was good for citizens, they would look at the city's poverty level, unemployment rate, underemployment rate, the level of domestic violence, chemical abuse and crime rate. It's higher locally than the rest of the state. That can be tied directly back to the economy. That island development isn't going to do a thing about those issues.
It probably wouldn't hurt for the paper to look up the distribution of wealth. You would find that most economic development favors a small group associated with the board of the economic development corporation. That place is a story in itself.
The paper recently went through some great hoopla about wanting to be responsive to Hispanic issues. The population taking the beating around here economically is primarily the Hispanics
The dismal understanding of economics is further evidenced in the questions asked and not asked. Economic dilettantes may be able to put out enough fluff to sell advertising or to allow some local wag to aggrandize themselves, but the Caller-Times does so at the expense of its own credibility.

This will help the Hispanic population. It will provide more minimum wage jobs The jobs that come from this type of development are not the jobs that help the general population. The only ones that make real money from this type of development are the business owners. I own a start up business and could possibly tap into this, but at what cost. I've been to the beach cities of Fl. and those beaches are no longer the beach of the locals. I'll give up my business before I give up my rights. We don't need more low paying jobs we need real jobs that pay a wage you can live on. |

Took a passenger out to the cruiseship yesterday from michigan and he told me that he drove on the beach for the first time in his life and he really enjoyed it. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

| Too bad the rocket scientists running the city council have to take the low road. With some effort ( not to be seen here) the Gulf Beaches of North Padre Island could be advertised as the last place in the United States where you can still drive on the beach. How is that for unique? But noooooo the city council chooses to cave in to the big, quick, money so we can be like the rest of the coast and enjoy the sight if big hi rise condos were you can see the beach if you choose to rent a fifth floor room. Guess we all have to remember there is no money into catering to Joe Citizen. How sad. |
