Saw this on the Breakaway site yesterday:

Re: Red Tide
by Nickaway on Yesterday, 9:20 am

Bob Hall and North Packery this morning. I could feel it in my throat and nose but no signs of dead fish yet. Tony Amos said he would check a water sample for us if we get it to him. I will do that tomorrow morning. Regards Nickaway

With 20-30 mph SE winds with higher gusts prior to the cool front on Fri., the stronger areas of this red tide now moving up the coast from SPI could mean the end of our great fall fishing this yr. Let's hope the NW winds behind the front move this bad water out into the Gulf and away from our section of the beach before it gets into the CC Bay system. I hate to see those dead bull reds littering the beach like 3 yrs ago.

Yeah, Nicole went surfing yesterday at Bob Hall and Packery and was complaining that her eyes were burning. She said the foam on the water had a red tinge to it and didn't smell so good. I sure hope it goes away.

An "official" sample was collected from Packery today about 2:00.

Will let you know how it turns out.

I was out there this morning and my eyes were burning, nose running and my lips felt like I had rubbed jalepeno on them. I did manage to catch a 25 inch red in first gut along with a small flounder. I didn't see any dead fish. Oh yeah I started coughing also.

Heard a report this morning the south Padre Island red tide was breaking up and strong winds have been credited for this.

From the TPWD Red Tide Monitoring/Status site:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/environconcerns/hab/redtide/status.phtml

October 9, 2009

The red tide bloom seems to have been transported north out of the South Padre Island area. TPWD received reports of aerosols yesterday from the Padre Island National Seashore, Packery Channel and Port Aransas. Water samples collected from around the Packery Channel jetties were found to contain low concentrations of Karenia brevis. TAMU’s Imaging Flow CytoBot detected low concentrations of Karenia brevis at the Port Aransas jetties as well. To date no fish kills have been reported in association with this event.

What do you think this means for the weekend of the 16th?

From Hardscience:
The air is tough to breath and there are dead fish on the beach at the campground. TPW is heading out and we will go down island sampling water this afternoon.

I have no idea and I'm not sure that anyone does. I'm sure they can model it somewhat but don't know the degree of accuracy. I'm sure you can find good beach to fish though. It's not an event that stretches the entire coastline. It will be in some areas and it won't be in some areas, and it may move into the area you're in and you may want to move. No telling... just stay flexible - there's a lot of beach out there.

If the tide isn't killing the fish do they still feed during a red tide, or do they shut off, and not bite?

You really should not be fishing where red tide is strong enough to smell and feel the effects. No one knows for sure what the effects are, but from my experiences you do not want to hang around any red tide blooms. Only time will tell how bad this one will be. Back to your original question, they say if you are able to catch them they are alright to eat. The red tide kills fish from lack of oxygen.

According to the TPWD website, the red tide toxin causes central nervous system paralysis in fish, so they die not because there is a lack of oxygen in the water, a much commoner cause of fish kills, but because they can't move water across their gills to oxygenate them. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/environconcerns/hab/redtide/faq.phtml
