If you wanna fish the base you gotta get a MWR pass, it's $20bucks and you'll have to pass a back ground check. Call 361-961-2811 (?)
www.nascc.navy.mil (this is their website)
So I was interested in Kayak launch sites along the boat hole, and there are two jetties just south of the marina that are open for fishing the jetty furthest south is large enough to drive on park and launch, it's fairly rocky. But should save alot of paddle time
all sorts of broken concrete & rocks along these "jetties"
there is also a pier on the boat hole side
Next to CC Bay side
There's a nice looking shell beach, easy wade / kayak launch site
Then there is the a pier on the CC Bay side that is lighted and fairly long, has rod holders at the end. On the protected side it's probably 8 or 9' deep. And not to sure on the other side.

| I grew up fishing ALL of It, I love that place...Boy' do I have some stories about the NAS and the boat hole. Some of the best times of my life were spent fishing the Naval Air Station with my Dad's Navy/fishing buddies the old salts (old fisherman). I think the strong values thay instilled in me like fishing etiquette (respecting a fisherman's area), helping people and the fine art of using Mirrolures and soft plastics has made me the type of fishermen I am today.........My Mother & Father's ashes are there of Demit Island as well. |

With the loss of military numbers (HM-15 etc) the MWR programs which by law must at least break even were losing money, and in peril of being lost. This will likely ensure that the programs stay in place to do as designed...serve the active duty and retired military.

I remember when in High School (late 80's) we could just drive on the base and say where we were going, all you had to have was current insurance and a valid picture id. And the base was pretty much open to what you wanted to do.
I think the 20 bucks is worth it, and some great fishing locations, clean, safe and most folkls i ran into were supper cool.
I think the MWR could do some work (a couple of buckets on a front end loader of caliche/gravel) to make a better kayak launch site, and market it some and they'd get alot more business. And make that marina a hoping place.
I saw the paint ball course, that looks real fun!!! |

| I'm with you on this one, RAT RED. A measley $20 a year to use all the NAS recreation facilities and possibly bring a swarm of civilians to the Base fishing areas, wading shorelines, and boat ramp is way out of line. We military people and retirees earned those perks the hard way. The golf course and rental equipment at the marina, plus maybe the physical fitness cntr should be all that is included in that package. |

I've seen 1st hand how effective it is to allow local civillians limited use of MWR facilities. Any help MWR/NAF operations get from the extra use will be returned to the facilities and keep them operating.
Most people I've seen launching yaks do it just north of the marina or along the beach area. Very easy access in either spot.
The fishing on base is excellent for flounder (beach area wadefish/gig spot) trout, mangrove, gaftop, croaker, ribbonfish and the occasional redfish and big uglie. the beach area is great for wading w/ a fly rod.
My PB's from the big pier:
22 1/2" flounder
24" spottedtrout
22" silver trout
41" big ugly
18" mangrove |

Stand down sailor, I understand where you are coming from, as long as they do good back ground checks it will limit the amount of slobs trying to take advantage of cheap or free stuff offered by our government, granted most never wore the uniform, an they are usually the first in line. The base patrol will keep many inline, most will get a speeding ticket as they won't be able to adhere to the 30mph basewide zone. There's plenty of room for everyone, everyone thats good and just that is. I guess the days of military being just for military are over. I remember being treated bad by civilians when I was in the Navy outside the limits of the base. However i sure did like them civilian chicks that frequented our clubs on base, learned lots of tricks from them. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

The army depot has over 5000 employees working and spending money out here. The base and its government revenue actually keeps this area alive. Not the tight wad tourists. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Not to defend or offend anyone, but he actually said, "them TO civilians" not "them civilians".

We pay our own paychecks and support our own bases as well. Uncle Sam collects from the military just like civilians.

As would any other member of this board who suddenly found many new faces at their honey hole one day.
I am active duty, and I feel a little shorted about this. I understand the business side of it with MWR needing to stay out of the red, but it is still hard not to feel like those perks have somehow been taken from me. |
