way too murky...
even if an angler is entered in a tourny(bay or beach)how could NPS fine them and have it stand in court?
"hey, mr ranger, I got tired of not catching anything outside of the park for the tourny so I quit the tourny. since I'm at the coast, I thought I'd try to save the day and fish here for my own personal gain."

Perjury is a much more severe offence than the ticket...

David Sikes has a comprehensive story about the SUP requirements on the front page of the sports section of the October 1 Caller-Times hard copy edition, but I'm unable to find it anywhere in the on-line edition so I can post a link. Anyone having better luck, please post that link.

BTW, as promised, I asked HardScience about the issue while at his office yesterday, but he referred me to someone I'm not on speaking terms with. Sorry. I think when you read David's article you'll have even more questions, but he's given you a contact for asking them.

I did post it over there. The park is taking some real strange stances lately. I think they can require permits, but I don't think they can dictate how these tournaments set up their rules. I'm pretty sure that's not within there federal mandate.

I don't know so I'll just sit back and watch on this one...they threw so many rules, regs and $ figures at me I just decided to stay the hell out of there. I have never seen anything like this before....I have been watching a bunch of shows on PBS in the evening about National Parks around the U.S.......don't remember any rules and regs like this being talked about.

Finally decided, now that I've picked up this package and heard it ticking, that I will put it down and walk softly but quickly far, far away. Shocked If, as Mark Twain wrote, somebody investigates further and gives a report, I want to hear it from another county. If the reporter therafter needs medical assistance, would the individual please do as another ex-Corpsman, Bill Cosby, said: "Take two aspirin and mail in the five dollars." Rolling Eyes

think I see progress on this:

If an organization uses the park to host - SUP definitely needed

If the organization doesn't' dictate the boundary - should they pay? yes according to PINS rep.

If extra park resources are needed to manage - SUP needed

On July4th or Labor day weekend - we all pay but no SUP needed

When bird island is overflowing with tournament trailers - should they pay? yes according to PINS rep except STAR tourn.

If friends/family get together, arrive in separate vehicles, camp in general vicinity - SUP needed? yes according to rule if over 25 people.

question now is enforcement levels and fine amounts per infraction.

Surfcats SUP is $7000, Sharkathon SUP is $1700. Not sure about the other tournaments and events like weddings/gatherings etc.

What if someone who is a die hard fisherman ran for Congress and squashed this kind of poo poo. Why do we let stupid people make stupid rules that we have to live by?

The NPS is a joke who is turning PINS into a joke. I hope Ken Burns has the balls to tell what a bureacratic pile of poo poo the NPS has turned into in his documentary. This is insane "for the enjoyment of the people" my supple bum.

Unless things have changed. I have had nothing but bad experiences from the Surf Cats tournament. A bunch of out of towners who come down here every once and awhile and take advantage of the fall mullet migration with their big tournament. Nothing but a big fish kill as I remember, whatever happened to if you're not going to eat it release it?
I remember one time at my usual spot there was a Surf Rats tournament and I was there with my son and I was just trying to catch some whiting or perch right by the pilings with an ultralight spinning rod/reel and accidentally hooked a small ray. Everyone with 200 yrds descended on me like a pack of vultures. I could have said something, but decided to sit back and watch what some would call a "Darwin Awards Type Experience"....

It was fun watching them in 1 ft of water trying to catch something to win the tournament for over 2 hours. I drove away with my limit of reds that day and still wonder.............what the **** were they thinking!

I'll take the old $5 bet on who catches the biggest fish tournament and the money goes to a club or charity over any "let the mindless masses pay for a chance to win a big pot of money and disregard any thoughts of conservation and respect for nature:!

And that's I all I gotta say about that.........Forrest Gump..........errr.... SM Crying or Very sad

I've noticed there have been several posts with the amounts of SUP costs for both sharkathon and surfcats. The difference in prices posted were due to the number of anglers fishing the tournament and the holiday schedule in which the surfcats tournament fell on that year. That particular year when surfcats were quoted $7000.00 and some change for their tournament we (sharkathon), if my memory serves me correclty, ended up paying out some where in the neighborhood of $2500.00. Our permits from the get-go were no more than $350.00 so we too saw a significant increase in fees. The fee increase took place in 2007 I believe. This years tournament has been the only year where I personally saw an increase in the amount of rangers on duty. Years past there hasnt been a noticable difference to me to justify the permit fees. I have no problem with the fees if it will keep the not so glamourous tournaments from hosting at PINS. If you figure 600 participants the fee per angler for the SUP is less than $5.00. Incorporate that in your entry fee and there you go. CYA its the only way to go.
