Sorry I got a bit long winded....

Got skunked the last 2 days in a row, hitting 3 of my favorite spots with arties, and was very discouraged. Alarm went off at 5am because I forgot to reset it from fishing the last 2 days in a row, so I figured since I was up I would go fishing.

Hit up 3 bait shops before I found live shrimp, but I had a hunch that its exactly what I needed to snap the cold streak. Hit the water by 7, and started catching fish. Water was gin clear. I say "misplaced fish" because I was NOT fishing "coastal" waters, I was in the bay, not at packery, not in the surf, and I was catching fish that were not exactly typical for the place I was fishing. Started off with two trout, 17 and 20. Then caught a 25 inch ribbon fish. Then my popping cork got snagged on some structure (i was using a looong leader), and although I brought an extra cork, I didn't have a leader, so I had to make one from my 10lb test main line! Next fish hit like a torpedo, and I got nervous. After screaming drag for a bit, finally got it to the net and its a 24 inch smack??? How it didnt bite through the leader, I have no idea. Next few fish were big skippies that broke me off eventually. Retied the "leader" and the next fish started screaming drag again? Thought it was another smack, then it got close and it saw a big blunt head and a yellowish tail. I thought, Jack Crevalle??? Nope, it was a ~20 inch pompano, maybe less, didn't measure. Fish a while more and got 5-6 mangrove snapper, one was big enough for sushi. Then I caught 2-3 very large needlefish. Everything on live shrimp. Arties weren't producing. All morning the tide was moving hard, the bay was glass, and skippies/trout/smacks were finding small rafts of finger mullet and busting them. Saw a flounder come up too. Left with just the two trout, smack, pomp, and mangrove. Pompano and smacks were either lost or, clearly, following the large movement of bait filled warm clear water from the gulf.

thanks, I think its some kind of slam? Maybe the "unlikely slam".

FYI, we all know pompano is a good cooking fish, but man, tried that big guy as sashimi last night. HOLY &*%^$% It was off the hook. The texture is so firm, that you can slice is razor thing like deli meat. It almost has the consistancy of pork fat, but it melts in your mouth. Hard to describe it accurately and make it sound appealing at the same time, but all I am saying is try it! The mangrove and the smack here great raw as well, but now I am going to have to get a surf rod and start targeting pomps.

yeah, matbe it is the unlikely slam, but a forsure slam non the less. I heard someone caught a gag grouper in nighthawk, and they said Packery would have no effect on the lagoon ......w-h-a-t-e-v-e-r......

Very nice report. Any idea of the underlying structure you fished?

shoreline has rocks and boulders, the substrate is firm packed sand, but I guess there must have been scattered rocks as well.
