Took my 6 year old son to the south end of the sticks Saturday after lunch and saw a lot of shark fishing stands set up down the beach. We found a place where we had a little room and cast netted for some mullet. First cast I caught 4- 10 inches so I tossed one on a shark rig and swam it out to the third sand bar, on my way back it came a down pour sending my son running for the truck even though he was wet from swimming anyway. I threw the net out some more and caught a dozen or so more mullet around 6 to 8 inches. I took two of them hooked them on a double steel leader and waded out to the second gut tossing to the inside edge of the third gut. I started playing with my son burrying him in the sand when the real with the steel leader on it started scrreaming. I ran to the real to see that the 300 yards of line was nearing the end of the spool. I eased the brake on and fought to get it out of the holder because of the pressure (backwards of what I should have done) but fought it for 20 minutes before getting it close to shore. I noticed by this time several people were standing near by to see what I had. When I got it past the first gut I saw a long dark colored body with a sharp pointed tail and several people said shark. After I was totaly wore out and my arms cramping I finally got it close enough to the bank where I could drag it in and it was my biggest kingfish to date. I had never caught a king from the bank before and could barely believe it, along with my witnesses. Once I rested enough to catch my breath I took it to the truck and measured it at 46 inches. After everyone came over to look and congradulations We packed it up and headed to the house. I would have stayed longer but after cutting the fish up three times to get it in my ice chest I had no room left. I would have had pictures but my camera had been stolen.

Congrats on the catch, I've never hooked into a king but they look very fast and streamline. Do you like eating kings? I've only heard bad reports of their taste, do you have any special cooking methods?

nice job on the personal best. Sounds like a blast. Kings are good, just gotta bleed em, chill em, and eat em quick. Lots of people smoke them too, never tried it but heard its great.

Also heard of the "cut the loins out and boil them routine". Makes a killer substitute for canned tunafish", if one was so inclined.

Only drawback is you need to do the boil outside. Apparently, mama's not too keen on the house smelling like the back of the baitstand around 4:30 on a hot August afternoon...........

I just cut the tail and hung it from the tailgate to let it bleed and then gutted it at the same time. Took it home cleaned it removed the skin and cubed it, the other side I cut a few steak slabs and cooked on the grill, the cubed I fried and it was awesome. I hate strong fish taste but as long as you cut the red off and remove the skin it seems to remove a lot of that strong fish taste.

cut out the blood lines and cook it just like fried chicken... soak in butter milk and coat with seasoned flour. very little offensive fish taste.
