Headed out to the mudhole near my house for the elusive(for me this year) Slot Redfish. Launched at sunrise and headed out to catch some bait. Pulled up to the first stop and right away hooked into a nice trout that then spit the hook this went on repeatedly until I switched to a treble hook. Then wham a 18" trout. The bite then went to the hardheads so I moved on.
Got to the next spot and again trout right at first 21" It gets a little slow with small reds and small gafftop. I through out a 6" live skip jack I caught and the line starts cranking. I reel it in to find a 23" trout. Bait runs out so I head to gather more up and come back.
Sure enough get back and nothing is biting but hardheads so I figure what the heck I cut up a larger skipjack I had caught earlier and threw out a huge chunk. 15 minutes later a 24" red goes in the box.
I throw out the last piece hoping to catch one more. sure enough ten minutes later it gets picked up and starts moving. I set the hook and fish on. I am pumped I can tell it is a big fish from swells in the water and then it goes down on bottom. I pull up anchor and go for a ride I start wondering if it is a stingray the way it is hugging bottom but it has an odd head shake feel to the line. After about 20 minutes I see the leader and a shape in the water. I know it is not a stingray but if it is a red it is the biggest I had ever seen. Every now and then a mass of bubbles would blow up from it. It finally breaks top and I get a real look at the size of it, and what it is.
My first thought was that the fish had wrapped a log and that was what I was seeing. Then I begin to wonder how I was going to land this this thing. I decide to head to shore and pull it in. It was no where near ready to come in yet.

Sorry for the video being so shaky I am trying to learn how to edit these.
The rod in the picture is 6 1/2 feet so I figure he was about 5 1/2-6 feet long. I don't know how heavy he was I couldn't pick him up. Course that probably not saying much cause I was worn out. That 12 lb test sure held up though. This made my new personal biggest fish yet. Now I got to start looking for something bigger.
After that excitement decided to call it a day and headed back ended the day with 1 red, 3 trout and a great story. _________________ Tis but a flesh wound.

| Glad you got your slot and hope you left that gar's supple bum on the bank. Looks like you'll be targeting tarpon and sharks. |
