Headed out to the Rigs offshore for my first trip far offshore. According to my gps furthest one out was 3 miles. Pulled up a small rig and cast out with a drifting ribbon fish. Before I could get another rod set to put some squid on bottom the reel starts screaming . I fight it a little and then fish off. By this time I am pumped always nice when the first bait gets a good hit. I through it out again and hang on to the rod this time and again off it goes. After that dead I catch a 25" drum on bottom and about 20 of those trigger fish. Worked my way from rig to rig and each time 2 big runs and then quiet. Finally get to the last rig and land a 37" King. Right after that I catch a second one land it and was about to take its picture when it decided to "wake up" He got his head halfway up more shorts when I reflexively kicked and off he went to fight another day. About this time I started chasing some ling around the rig caught one at 27" and the other went into the rig and would not come out. I got to see a large Tarpon roll on top he looked to be about 7 ft. Then I saw him again while chasing the ling he was just cruising the rig.
All in all a great trip I had planned on going out with someone else but they had something come up and I already had the fever. Great learning trip for me and a lot of firsts. First Ling ever, First King from a yak, First trigger from a yak. Also leaned a lot of my tackle was too light. I had several of the "latches" get pulled open and fish run off with my hooks. . Also learned ling are not really interested in Ribbon fish but put a piece of cutbait in front of them and hang on. Most of importantly I need to where longer pants when in the yak. Looking forward to going out with a group next time to get some real pointers.

Are you tying up to the rigs or using an anchor?
How long did it take you to paddle to closest rig? |
