I am soon going to purchase my first 4wd and would prefer a diesel. I was told diesels are heavier than gas engines. Does anyone drive their diesels in the sand, if so do they get stuck more frequently? What size and type of tires are recommended?

Thanks for any input.

I think its a trade off with weight and power. Yup my diesel was way heavier in the front (reinforced) end than my gas with the brush guard.

I have yet to get stuck in my F350 crew cab. I run 31575R16 BF goodrich all terrains now and had Pro Comp Xterrains before these. I run down to Bigshell and beyond without issues.

I used to run down past the 4wd sign in a 2wd cummins diesel all the time when the conditions were good. I now have a 4wd cummins and so far no problems. Even in some soft stuff. Just remember to deflate your tires some.

I have a 2000 year model F250 4X4 with a 7.3 ltr Diesel in it that has made every Billy Sandifer PINS clean-up since then with out any problems. I have also made several trips to the PM Jetties doing some fishing and/or showing relatives and friends the Island. I do have about 50 years of driving around in the sand near Falfurrias that probably helps out and carry the right equipment with me on the PINS adventures. PS - I always depressure the tires to 30 PSIG when I hit the sand.

dodge 2500 diesel.. not a problem..
now the problem that people run into is their tires
never been stuck. some close calls like in y pass or high roads.
now i go down when most people get scared to even drive up to the 4x4 sign.

i have a towing package on my truck.. so currently do not have all terrain tires. have bfg's rugged trail.. they work ok down there but i do air them down... 265/70/r17.. alot of buddies are running 285 to 335.. so if you have all terrains and bigger paw print.. not a problem.. you prob dont even need to air them down at all..

however even on my chevy i would still air my tires down when it starts to slip in 4x4 high..

had pulled several people out of y pass tring to get over and one 4x4 high sided bad.. tough to pull him out, initally told him to air down tires(he didnt) so i pulled my straps and was leaving.. he lowered tire pressure pulled him out in 2 wheel drive.

lower tire pressue gives you greater tire patch on the sand.
easier to pass over some of the debris, nails sharp objects, etc.
easier on tranny..
+++ have a good air pump and i dont mean the $10 ones from walmart. harbour frieght has one for 50 and works great to air tire back up to 100# plus

Thanks for the input. I currently own a 2wd diesel. My buddy and I have made a couple of trips to the PM jetties in his 4wd 460 ci @ only 8mpg from DFW. I would like to get a 4wd before our next trip.

I used my Ram Quad Cab LWB 2500 Cummins in the Big Shell Clean Up. I was pulling a 16' tandum axle trailer. Got bogged down a couple times when the trailer was loaded. Put it in Low 4 cleared the sand in front of the tires and eased on out. Nick made me quit at the 20 because the conditions got were getting worse. I would have been fine without the trailer. So I would say with the right tires (mine are highway all weather) the weight is not that much of a problem. BTW that truck weighs in around 7000 lbs.

Not to get too off the point [diesels] but common sense and driving technique are WAY more important than what you drive. A four wheel drive anything just means that if you DO manage to get yourself into trouble, you are in DEEP trouble and it's going to be even harder to get out! Shocked Embarassed Crying or Very sad

it's more about how you drive in the sand... I've have gas/des trucks, full & compact. Seems my old toyota's do well as they're lighter.... tires are inportant too!
