Do all of you air your tires down when going down PINS? If so, how low do you bleed them out to? I have a friend with a new Jeep that wants to go down PINS and I told her to air down her tires, and she was asking how much to let out. I just usually eyeball it, so I never actually check my air pressure. Thanks.

I doubt she will need to air down her tires in a jeep. I never air down my F350 when I run down PINS and it probably weighs in at about 2 jeeps |

| I have never let air out of my tires. I guess you might let air out of your tires as a last resort if you were stuck provided you had a pump to air them back up. A shovel and a bucket of elbow grease is all I ever bring. L |

my tires are usually a little low to begin with, so I don't think about it

| I do air down now. My truck is a k3500 crewcab and it has stock tires that run 65lbs on the highway.. that is way to much for driving down PINS as I found out a few months back. It drove like a cadilac once I aired the tires down.. |

I agree with Sapo. If the driving is tough, airing down to around 24#s or so will not hurt the tires, even if you have to drive a few miles on the pavement to air back up. Benefits can include a much softer ride, less wear and tear on vehicle (especially automatic transmissions) and unless the beach is pretty hard packed - better gas milage _________________ Big Ed

This topic has been posted many of times..
Not to be disrespectfull but there is a permanant post about PINS survival and driving tips.. please read it.. great info for newbies as well as experienced PINS folks.
To help out and be more specific.
AS SAPO and BIG ED mentioned and myself we do air down our tire pressure. it is easier on the vehicle and yourself for the ride.
However; the main reason for this is the type of tires and vehicles.
look at your tire patch say on concrete when you wash the vehicle and it leaves a mark on the ground... it is say 25 square inches..( 5x5 ) contact patch.. you air down the tire pressure say from 50#'s to 25#'s the contact patch is now double the area. --- imagine walking on sand with flip flops you sink or leave a foot print only so deep.. put on high heels how far do you sink.. cant walk.. same thing on tires.
If you have all terrain tires and run larger tires than normal for your vehicle you have already probably doubled your tire patch if not more. therefore your vehicle does not sink in the sand as much and has better traction.
Also if you run over debris like boards with nails.. higher pressure tires have less give so it can be easier to punture your tire as opposed to same tire with less pressure in it.
But alot of this depends on driving conditions, type of vehicle, tires etc.
Lowering tire pressure has been a way for most drivers to be able to get unstuck when really in a mess.
some of this is trial and error.. so have a good air pump and survial kit for pins.
most vehicles with 4x4 dont get stuck out there because of lost traction, we get stuck because we high side the vehicle the trail gets to deep or we go off the driven path and tires dig in to get traction but the sand is holding up the chasis of the vehicle and tires cant grip solid sand to move.
be safe and have fun.. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

I think Dalyn has experience with high heels on the beach |
