|
|
I have been fishing the surf the last few days and the skipjacks are relentless. I know there are more desirable species around because I have managed to catch a few between all the damn skipjacks.
Any suggestions on a leader material that will be more resistant to being cut off? I use power pro and tie my topwaters directly to it. I'm tired of watching $6 lures swim away. I don't know if mono would be any better and what test I could go up to that wouldn't affect the action of the lures.
For those knowledgeable in this area do you consider skipjacks being in the area a good indicator of trout or other gamefish or do ya'll normally just pack up and try another spot. |

filet one of those skipjacks and toss it out with 5oz on a 12-0 circle hook and wait. Either a big red or shark will be on the other end of the line within 30 minutes! Best damn cut bait there is. |

More than likely your not losing tackle to skip jacks more than likely its a spanish mackeral. And skip jacks are good bait for reds. _________________ ''ONE LAST CAST''

| I was out there today. The skipjacks were thick up close to the beach. I got cut off also. I don't think it was a mackeral. But who knows? Do the mackeral also come that close to the beach? |

| I could see the forked tails in the wave crowns. I was standing in the middle of them. |

Skipjacks have very sharp edges on their gill plates. When they do their twisting and turning in the air the line can get wrapped up in them and cut. _________________ Dave

I agree with Big John, I sometimes target them just for bait. Give me a couple of good ones and I have a great time. _________________ Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock.

If you can't catch a red or shark with skipjack filet, then there just isn't anything within a long way.
Last trip down I caught a nice 19" Mackeral in the 1st gut. They do come in close from time to time. |

The trout work under the skip jacks let your bait sink and use Flora Carbon 25# because the trout could be line shy.

| I have been into the skippies before. They are a blast. Where there are skippies, there are smacks and jacks. It is the smacks that are cutting you off. I use a steel leader on a double drop rig with live mullet and I still get cut off. The smacks are hitting the line where the line hits the surf. I switched to green stern line and I do not get cut off as much. Try it. L |

P-line leader material, on a swivel, about 18" off of your braid. my daughter (5) fishes with braid and this keeps her line from getting cut off, especially when she is using a Carolina Rig. _________________ Johnny D

i was out there yesterday, early in the morning a huge flock of feeding gulls came in....i must have walked a good mile throwing a silver spoon, nothing but skips! a lot of fun, but no trout or smacks
all the big skips straightned out my treble hook, i had to bend it back with some pliers _________________ "When times are tough,
