I've got a question. Can you get away with using standard Fly Rod and Reel's in the bay or does it have to be saltwater gear. I took my son and my daughters boyfriend to Cabela's today to look at some Fly Combo's.
Upon entering the Fly shop and letting the Clerk know what our intentions were, he didn't hesitate in informing me that the STANDARD gear wouldn't work. Infact I believe his words were that the saltwater would eat it up in a day. It was about a 2 hr trip for us and the trip was meant for my daughters boy friend to buy a combo. Needless to say we left with out one.
My son has been fly fishing for a little over a year now and is nuts about it.
In fact we bought our first Fly rods & reels last summer before our trip down to Port A . That was our first experience with a Fly Rod , when we got finsihed we rinsed the reel and rod and are still using them today.
Just looking for some input. We are heading down next Saturday and our intentions are to TRY some some Fly fishing. |

Charles,
It may not take abuse like a saltwater rod/reel but by all means, it can work. With time, either your son or the daughter's boyfriend may want to invest in a saltwater rod, but there is no reason to not fly fish if at the coast. Lots of soap and water every trip will certainly do the trick. All throughout college, I fished Galveston's west bay with a bass fly rod and caught a lot of fish. What you caught at Cabela's was a salesman! Go fishing and by all means, do it with your fly gear! Tight lines. |

The key is to clean your tackle as soon as you can, after you get off the water. While it might not last as long as an anodized reel, with proper care, you should be able to get some good service from it until you can get a saltwater reel. _________________ Tight lines and following seas,
