I took my two youg ones to south of BHP, tide was high and weed on land but the water looked good. Anyway Eric VW was pushing the pro closure to create development and jobs, etc. His guest was another pro devlop/ close the beach writer. A caller set them straight as he personally new Sch. and said that this is purely a land selling deal. Whether it is one developer or another, the deal is close the beach then he can sell the land.
I hope their will be voices to represent our side. As everytime I try to get on the radio they bump me off. Development is good but rape is a crime. T.

I've never been a victim of rape, but I'm pretty sure that closing the beach to VEHICULAR traffic is not anything like being raped.

Curtis rock posted on another website:

“It's like a Federal Prison and you're totally being sodomized without the courtesy of a reach around.... I don't think this is anything like rape.

It's a closure of VEHICULAR traffic, not the beach.”

After challenged to post on this site he posted:

“Ok. What are they going to do? Upload an supple bum-whoopin' on me? LOL

In fact, you may see me at City Hall tomorrow supporting the cause of development if I can make it after a meeting that I have.”

Now he attacks figurative speech. It’s a fare comparison for someone who has something that is about to be taken away from them without prior consent.

Common Curtis Rock open your can on us. We care about the beach and the people that have been here for decades, not just the potential wealth it may build. We are the guardians of the old ways.

I'm a SCUBA diver and I care about the beach too. I care so much, that I don't want cars driving on a portion of it. I also care about development. To me, there's a perfect compromise: the beach is still public, a portion of beach is "pedestrian friendly," and the rest of the beaches around here still allow vehicular traffic.

If you want to get to the beach so badly, it won't hurt to walk.

I spent a couple weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaii has an open-access policy as well...there are no private beaches. However, no beach allows vehicular traffic. In fact, if anyone's familiar with the Captain Cook Memorial Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii - it's about a 45 minute hike downhill, and about an hour and half back up. The beach was mine, just as much as anyone else's, but I had to walk to get to it.

Oh, and nobody's kicking my supple bum and I haven't asked anyone to do so. I choose to live a peaceful and productive life.

I appreciate where you are coming from Curtis as I understand the need for development. Those of us a little older than you including me see how this starts as just a little bit here and a little bit there until finally you have some place like Destin Florida where it is very tough to access the beach. It may not turn out that way in this instance but I have my doubts. When you are 65 and want to still Scuba dive and you have to lug your gear and tank 6 or 700 yards to get to the South Jetty that they originally said we would have a parking lot on you might think differently.

Do you fish or just scuba dive?

What is to stop them from closing just this section of beach. Curtis, what you are really trying to elude to is that it is ok to move forward on closing every beach to traffic. You would want people to have to hike it the 50-60 miles to reach the south end of the National Seashore? That would make our beautiful natural resource inaccessible to thousand of beach goers and anglers. Only the physically stout and young will be up for the journey. Is that fair???

People in Fla & Ca were thinking this same thing 30yrs ago, "they only want to close a strip in front of the condos" Now look at thier beaches!
Hope this dont start a civil war.

Look at what happened to almost all of Galveston beach toward San Louis pass. It is now unlawful to drive an all of it except a small strip near San Louis pass. If we give them an inch they will take the rest of it.

If you guys took time to read the ordinance, it will not allow future councils to further close the beach to vehicular traffic without a vote from the people. So the THEY'S that you're talking about who want to close the beach in the future are your neighbors.

If I fish, it's on my parents' dock at their house on Padre Island.

They said after the last ordinance they would not come back for more beach front. They lied. Their promises mean nothing. Ordinances can be changed.

Good job CurtisRock you actually attached one of our points. A pour attack, but you did try.

By the way I own a house on a canal that I can also fish of the dock. I worked hard got educated and bought it, not my parents. I also am fortunate enough to have a secure future. THIS DOES NOT GIVE ME THE RIGHT TO TAKE FROM OTHERS!!

It's not up to the City Council anymore, it's up to the voters from now on. Get that through your thick skull.

Hopefully one day I'll own a home soon and I definitely won't be able to afford one on a canal. If you guys keep hosing down developments like these, then that opportunity becomes less likely.

p.s. I've been attacking the issue, you may want to scroll up on your screen and read.

So why isn't this closure under vote from the people? I'll tell you why, because the majority of people don't want it and the city council knows that.

You, nor I knows what the people want. Have you taken a scientific poll? Have we run this issue through an election yet? I'm not Dr. Bezdeck, but I guarantee that nobody knows what the citizens want.

It can't go to vote until the City Council votes on it, a petition is filled out which meets the number requirements, and it's put on the ballot. This was brought up during the City Council meeting yesterday because Brent Chesney wanted to know what he could do to just put it up for referendum.

We'll see what the people decide, but in my opinion the people decided this when they voted for their elected officials.

If it were up to me I would vote to build nothing on Padre Island including homes. One big Hurricane will wipe everything out on the island and it is only a matter of time. God forbid it happens in our lifetime. I wish everyone would stop with the economic development nonsense. This resort will create crappy low paying jobs for outsiders just like casinos. I wish we could keep the one thing that is unique to our area intact. We have and Island not a big strip mall filled with t-shirt shops and hotelsand other isores.
