Not trying to be a smart a$$ here, but in TX you legally HAVE to kill tilapia if you catch them in public waters. pretty sure I've got this right. Even if you don't want to eat it, they suggest you cut it butt to throat and throw it on the bank.
One more thing about Tilapia. They eat the crap of other fish. On striper and hybrid bass farms they use the tilapia to eat all the poo and clean the ponds.

Ironic isn't it since it is a non native. I remember as a kid when TP and W contemplated stocking Nile Perch into power plant lakes. They only did reds, orange mouth corvina and tilapia I guess unless the tilapia were an accident. We used the tilapia for bait to catch redfish in Tradinghouse Creek outside of Waco. I sure would have loved to have seen the Nile Perch.

so does that mean im breaking the law if i let one go? is it because its non native? does that go for all non native fish?

Yes, if you let it go you are breaking the law. Yes, it is b/c it is an introduced species that turned out to be bad for native fish species. (Imagine that). As far as I know, this applies to Tilapia state wide. I believe that grass carp must also be killed in certain water bodies, but not sure if that applies statewide.

Cool we just never got them in Tradinhouse or at Fairfield. They probably thought it might get too cold up that far north for the Nile Perch.

fwiw, topdog has it right. state law is that you gotta kill them when caught and yeah, they eat fish poo. Had a discussion with fishmonger here in Austin after 'dog talked fish poo (thought 'dog was hi).

make you think next time you ask for those 3.99 lb tilapia fillets at the heb, eh?

I must point out that there are precious few "native fish" : at least in freshwater. Gar, and some minnows. I think many of the catfish were introduced. You are talking about a state which has ONE natural lake. (Cado ) Every other lake was made by people.

Thats one of the reasons for whcih I love fishing the South Texas saltwater areas, for natural species. Nothing like hooking into a nice blacktip, or Smacks in the surf !

Dont get that in freshwater!

not a carp.. and that is a darn big talapia..
i usually catch them with a cast net..
they are pretty good eating.. not bad fish to eat..
did know that about the non native fish that they must be taken or killed..
guess that is why if fish salt water.. very clear cut, size, species.. etc..
and so much more fun.
