Check all the rollers on the door and the track.. Something has come loose or wore out. If the door isn't too heavy, pull the release on the track and try to push the door up by hand untill you feel it get in a bind and try to block it up at that point so you can see where the problem is.. Be real carefull because the door can come down on you if it comes out of the track... Check your wire cables in the corners if yours has them to make sure one didn't break or jump off the reel...

yep you need to see if you can move it manually.. If not it is def in a bind. I forced mine up once and it came off the track and almost landed on my brand new gto. On mine it had a broken spring which basically keeps the tension even between both sides. if it goes up and down easily manually you need to check the IR safety transmitters if they are not making a good signal to each other the door will only move a bit. You may of kicked one and its not lined up. they normally have lights on them that tell you if they are working. If one fails you can disable them somehow I just forget..

Sounds like a broken coil spring that is mounted above and across the top of the door on the inside of the garage.

Thanks for the replies. The door goes all the way up manually w/o a problem. Gonna look at the sensors and make sure there lined up right. Thanks for the help guys. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

There are 2 adjustments that control the amount of force that is applied to the upward and the downward motion. Increase those and see if that helps. If your controls were set too sensitive, the problem you describe can happen.
Like the others said, you might have something binding the travel. Release the mechanism that allows you to open the door manually and attempt to open it by hand. At the same time, you can be checking the travel for binding. Hope that helps..... _________________ HighTide

More than likely the IR senors. I never could bypass mine but I went to the Sears service center, they had one in stock and voila, just like new. Wasn't much as I recall. 40 or so??

Is it a Craftsman? How old is it? Those chain drive models use plastic gears. Eventually they all fail and will fail at difference places on the gears so where the door stops is a function of where the teeth gave out. Pull the housing off and look for lots of plastic debre. You can order those gears for about $30 and replace them yourself.

My dog chewed the wires to my sensors and I tried to disconnect them from the main box but then it would work at all.. It is a craftsman and I couldn't get any help here in Alice so I called a 1 800 number I found on the internet. I gave them the model # and they mailed them too me.. No problems now and I got rid of the dog.......

Pull the release and check by hand. Check to see that either one spring or one cable is not broken. That's my best bet. _________________ Big Ed

I had the same problem with a Craftsmen chain drive a couple of years ago. I replaced the worm gear and then just a couple of months ago it just would go up about 6 inches. I tried troubleshooting on the web and finally gave up and bought a new Genie direct drive. It's much quieter than the Craftsmen and also works smoother.

you have garage doors on the bluff??
j/k
Everyone seems to have covered the possibilities. Mine a few weeks ago was a broken spring, but that doesn't sound like what you have going on. _________________ Jeff

What Mad Dog said. Had the little plastic gear strip a few of its teeth a couple years ago. Did the same thing. Went up a few inches then back down, because it no it got to the wore spot on the gear. I was told by the parts guy at Sears they are designed to wear out fast. Should be a metal gear, but no one makes a metal replacement. Cost about #30 as I remember. Expensive little piece of plastic.
