We fished the longrods yesterday about 100yds north of the rocks and were getting lots of small Blacktips(released of course). Not much else biting but we saw some really big rays patrolling the shorebreak(20"+ wingspan). Lots of small children running and playing right in the area. Two weeks ago, I saw a surfer get hit and it was really sick. He was laying in the back of a truck and having convulsions(sp) really bad. The ambulance came out and took him to the ER, but just remember that for some people it just may hurt a bit, but you never know how your body will react to the poison expecially a small child. If you go out there , shuffle your feet and invest in some good polarized glasses and keep looking down cause they are there in 1 foot of water.
later,
Ernie

Thanks Tarzan for the reminder. I was at the 25mm Sunday and didnt see any but i know they were there in full force. Im yet to get stuck, hopefully it will stay that way forever but we all do need to be reminded every now and then. I try and always remember to do the Texas shuffle when im in the water now.

http://www.heatfactory.com/ I carry these in the truck. the heat will break down the venom. I have been hit before by a ray and thought ice would help. I was wrong.

I heard about hot water to lessen the pain. Have you had the misfortune to use this product on a stingray hit?

Dooh, I should have known that. I was there yesterday surfing, you may have seen me . I was also there when that kid got hit by the ray a few weeks ago I think. Was it a day when the surf was pretty big?

Im curious, how many of you guys that have been hit by a ray have been shuffiling when you were hit?, im wondering how much that actually helps.

speaking of that heres a post from breakaway about rays

Never been hit, but have shuffled my way into several rays in the past. When you slowly shuffle your feet, it brushes under them and they move out of the way, and do not try to hit you because you haven't hurt them.

When you step down on them though, it does hurt them and they are simply trying to defend themselves.

Really, rays are very docile in nature, and none that I have ever encountered are looking to barb anything, but as with most wild animals, they will defend themselves.

My husband Tarpon_Tamer got hit by a pretty good sized one when we lived in Brownsville. That was about 3 yrs ago. He was out on a boat fishing w/ a buddy and he caught one. He didnt wanna cut the line (cuz he wanted the lure back) and the tail whipped around and caught him on the left wrist. Long story short, an artery was hit. His buddy took him to the coast guard station and they took him to the ER. Wound was flushed w/ hot water. Scary part was when I saw him. He had a bandage from wrist to elbow. His hand got really swollen, had a bruise all the way down and had trouble using that hand for a few wks. Since then he is VERY leary of wade fishing or coming close to the rays. Of course I dont blame him. IT was pretty nasty and really opened my eyes as to how those creatures dont "mess around".
