An old salt friend who I haven't seen in 15 years calls me and says, come out to West Palm and go fishing with me and my posse. We're taking my 31 Bertram to do some swordfishing and later head down to the bahamas. . . tuna to dorado. Just get your arse here and split fuel/beer/bait.
How can I not go?
But, last time I was out, I got sicker than a dog. Party boat out of Port A in big swells on opening day of snapper. Never been sea sick, but now I'm worried. As I sat on that boat, dry heaving for 9 hours straight, I never wanted to be on teh water again.
Spending 4-5 days on a 31 foot boat. . . I can't repeat what happened on the party boat. I'll die.
Friend suggested the following:
Buy Bonine, take one the night before you sleep, take a 1/2 the next morning. Eat breakfast ( cereal ) and drink ginger ale. For added insurance, go to the local whole foods and buy the bottle of ginger capsules. You will not get sick if you follow these suggestions
Thoughts? Is there a more effective approach. Another friend who was a chef on a luxury yacht for years also suggested Bonine. _________________ Jeff

Non Drowsy Dramamine is Bonine and it works great! I have only been seasick once and never took anything most of the time. However I figure if I take the Non Drowsy dramamine and don't get sick I will keep doing that. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

you've received some really good advice, Bonine is the way to go.
the very best way, however, is to get offshore a bunch before you go and get your sea legs about you. _________________

Eat lots of Alphabet Soup before you go too. That way if the bonine doesn't work at least you can keep yourself entertained by seeing if you spelled any words as you spew over the side. |

| I go see your family Dr. and get a Rx patch. Scolopimene (sp?) You won't get sick but they will make you sleepy. The over the counter (CVS) brand Dramamine works just as well as the main brand. I worked for dolphin docks and routinely would get sea sick while working and customers would think I was crazy. Puke and rally! In all honesty the waves won't be as harsh as our gulf waters (Longer periods and shorter height) Have fun and take a lot of pictures! Jason Slocum |

LOL@alphabet soup.
Man, I was sooooo sick. The bastages I was with (buncha pirates) kept taking pictures of me the whole time. I didn't think it was humanly possible to have the heaves for 9 hours. But the 3/6 deckhands and 1/2 the passengers ended up sick too, so I didn't feel so bad.
OK, gotta concentrate on short trips to the rigs to get my sea legs. My florida friend is planning on the trip mid april during a good weather window. _________________ Jeff

If you get "that" feeling again, look at the horizon, slow down your breathing and breath deeply. I have been in some rough stuff too before and got queasy, but these things worked for me. The worst as you say, was when I was a teenager and my dad took me fishing with an old crusty dude who was a GREAT fisherman but tended to be a little on the crazy, macho man side. We went blasting out of Port A at sunrise with a big swell [for Texas] and an outgoing tide in what I remember being maybe an 18 - 20' cuddy cabin type fiberglass boat. The whole freeking boat would warp and flex when we hit each wave.......................................... NOT a good thing to see and NOT good for ones composure. I started to feel really sick and stopped looking at the boat and the waves and just stared at the horizon and felt fine there after. _________________ Dave

Wait a second.. weren't you a navy man? You didn't use those patches behind your ears did you? In the Navy we called those ***** patches.
When we had rough weather and took diplomats out to sea we would set up trash cans everywhere on the ship - not a pretty site. _________________

Try the preventatives. But as suggested, if you start feeling queezy stare at the horizon. My buddy knows is have a tendancy to get seasick and he warned me do not look at the bottom of the boat. I spilled part of my tackle box and he said, let me get it. But no, I had to be tough. Within about 15 seconds of looking at the bottom of the boat I was chumming away. I also found that I needed to eat before I went out. First time I tried the dry toast and was sick all day. Second time I ate a good breakfast, got sick, puked and was OK (well fairly OK) for the rest of the trip. _________________ Big Ed

funny thing , I never got sea sick in the navy, or when working on a commercial snapper boat. This was after closing the saloon down and then getting up at 5am and going out on a 24 ft in 2-4ft seas. Man I was sick. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Can't say as I've ever been sea sick. Now as for my son-in-law get him in a little chop and here we go. When I took him outside the jetties two times it was the two best day of fishing I have had. Your buds will love ya, free chum. _________________ Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock.
