O.k. I know I should know this but what is a lemon rig and how do you set it up? I have heard of this for years but never have asked about it. A diagram or a picture would be a great help. |

Jetty Rigs Topwater: (From Extreme Gulf Coast Jetty Fishing)
Lemon Bottle Rig
This is the answer to mid-water level fishing. This rig allows fishing the depths between 6 and 12 feet easily and without the tangle problem associated with the popping cork rig above as this rig tends to untangle itself on hitting the water. Also, the problem of hanging up in the rocks is greatly dimished as opposed to fishing the bottom. The casting length of this rig is only 3 to 6 feet although the fishing depth is 6 to 12 feet. The key is the 3-way swivel in the middle of the rig. The main line is tied to one of the loops on the 3-way swivel. Then 3-6 feet of monofilament is tied to one of the other loops on the 3-way swivel and a hook is tied to the other end of the monofilament. After that, another 3-6 foot piece of monofilament is tied to the last loop of the 3-way swivel and a Realemon bottle used as a float is tied to the other end of that piece of monofilament. The Realemon bottle should be filled 1/3 to 1/2 way with water to aid in casting. Sometimes it is filled with BB's to give it a rattle effect which is supposed to simulate the sound of bait fish feeding. Other advantages to this type of rig are that when reeled in the hook tends to head towards the float, thereby preventing it from getting snagged in the rocks and also you can many times feel the fish hit the bait even before the float moves because the main line is attached in the middle of the rig. This type of rig can be extremely productive when nothing else is working.

I was about to post the same exact thing! Great tool. I like to use 2-0 circles when pomp are at the jetties hooked through the tail section. Use a 5-0 when fishing for specks or spainish macs. Live shrimp or small piggies/croaker/pinfish work great with this app. If macs are at the jetties make suer to add a 1 foot section of steel braid leader above the hook. I always add 15 to 20 bbs for the rattle effect, never fill with water. Also, you can seal off the top once made with a little superglue or silicon.

A weighted cork will also work, although you will not have as much weight potential as in a lemon bottle.
One more, keep a finger on your line or at least watch for unusal movement in the cork such as going against the current. Reason being that many times a fish will not pull the float entirely under the water.
As previously stated, a very effective way of fishing. |

My uncle Bob [who lives in CC] used to make that exact rig but used a weighted popping cork instead of the lemon bottle. Didn't seem to help our results much though..................................... fishing with dead shrimp. _________________ Dave

You can also put some BBs in it to give float some rattle noise. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

Thanks for the comments on the diagram. Its well over 5 years old now and I still have the original
I first learned to use the lemon rig in the early 90s from a guy that fished the Port A N Jetty quite a bit. At the time my mother in law lived in AP and trips were quite frequent. I used to spend a lot of time on that jetty and caught a lot of fish. My jetty walking days have since dwindled down but I will always keep a lemon rig in the tackle box just in case.
BTW Thought I'd sticky this since it does get asked qbout every few months, it sure is worthy of it and a very effective and proven fishing technique. |

I ended up tying the hook on with a palomar, a improved clinch knot around the neck of the lemon bottle, and worlds-fair knots to the swivel. The world's fair knot is almost as strong as the palomar and doesn't require you to pass the entire workpiece through a loop, so I am starting to use them whenever palomar knots are just not practical to tie.
