If you support open carry of firearms in Texas now is your chance to sign the petition to get it into legislation.

My thought on the subject is that you give up the element of surprise if you show them that you have a gun and, your gun is just about as valuable to them as the drugs they seek. But it is not much thought. L

lotta yes's on that one. The only time I really carry a weapon is when I'm on a trip. You just never know when your gonna have a flat on the side of the road and have Mr.Crazy pullover and offer to help. "Would ya'll like some help" While you are standing there looking at the gravy and the lone french fry all matted up in his beard.

I'm torn on this one. I carry eveywhere I go. I was in favor of open carry and thought it was a good idea. Would stop someone from doing something really stupid in your company. But my license instructor told me guess who would be the first to get shot if something went down. You got it, if they see it your first in line. Before you can react your dead. So I have to hold with cancel.

But if you want to carry open that is your choice and you should be able to do that. That's the part that has me torn. Don't know but what I might carry open sometimes.

"He wore his gun outside his pants, for all the honest world to feel
Poncho met his match, you know, on the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin' word, but that's the way it goes"
~Townes~

There's a well-known story there about Open-Carry.

I am very much in favor of it, but it does have drawbacks as well, you have covered some of them. But I feel open carry is a very large deterrent to any type of criminal behavior. Its a lot like have an 80 pound German Shepard in your yard, most crooks are going to pass you by. But to those who don't it is your mindset that is going to settle the score.

The fact is most criminals are not crack shots, the days of Bonnie and Clyde, and the old time criminals who actually practiced with the tools they carried is over. Today your average street punk has never fired a shot in practice. I work on the unlucky ones who happen to catch a round. Lower leg shots, arm shots, and grazing wounds are the norm. Out of probably 25-30 shootings I have made in the past few years only one was actually instantly fatal. He took a 7.62x39 shot to the side of the head, but his brother only got hit once and it was a shot to the arm. 29 rounds managed to hit the car, two hits on the occupants. I go with dumb luck for the head shot...

The fact is if you are carrying you might be the number one target, but it also means the thug is not shooting at the ten year old kid there, or anyone else. The chances of you getting hit in the central nervous system are slim, and if you do happen to catch a random handgun round, you ought to be able to carry on the fight. Most gunshot wounds are not incapacitating, it is just the facts of what most thugs choose to carry.

To me open carry is the ultimate exercise of your 2nd amendment right, people get to see that the nice fellow who helps load groceries in their cart, stops to help fix a flat, and does a million other nice things is in fact one of those dreaded gun nut wackos the media likes to talk about. This isn't just about being able to protect yourself, this is about selling the public on the good nature, and excellent citizenship of the average armed American.

I spent ten days in Wyoming in September this year and I packed everywhere I went. Something comforting about having steel strapped to your waist in your sunday go to meeting holster... Very Happy

Steve
