Action is how fast the rod bends.
Power is it's strength. What it can handle.
I think I'm on the right track. Maybe Gary will chime in. _________________ Paul S Perez

action refers to how the rod flexes. Extra fast models will keep a relatively stiff shaft, while the tip of the rod flexes. On the other end of the spectrum(slow/moderate action), rods will flex throughout the length of the rod _________________ Posted by

It used to be easier to tell what a rod was in the old days, as it was more related to the taper. A quick taper (fat at bottom to narrow at the tip) was going to have all the flex toward the tip. A slow taper would have more flex throughout the rod and wouldnt' stiffen up until closer to the butt. With all the new materials and manufacturing advances, I can't tell until I pick one up. Action refers to the movement of the rod. As previously stated, a fast action will be relatively stiff about 70% of the rod from the butt end and the tip will have alot of whip to it.
A Slow action will bend all the way through the rod and is not very stiff. The entire rod is very whippy.
Power refers to the lure size and line size. Light rods would be 2 to 8 pound test. Medium-Light 8 to 15 pound test. Medium, 15 to 25 pound test. Medium Heavy, 25 to 50 pound test. Heavy 50 pound plus.
Each manufacturer of rods will have different values for pound test for a given "Power" One medium in G-loomis may be Medium Light in Berkley or Medium Heavy in Shimano. Just go with the line and lure weights listed on the rod when referring to "Power." _________________ I am a pirate 200 years too late. |
