Fished Port A Friday night thru Saturday morning with my buddy Danny for a legal possesion limit of reds (6 each). Threw fishbits strips in the crab flavor, Gulp Saltwater baits in the New Penny Shrimp 2", Trout Paddle Tails 4". Also the Molting Crab 3". Everything we threw, they hit! I think if we were to have thrown a white piece of cloth on our hooks they would have hit them. They were thick as thieves! My hooks were No.3 black Circle hooks and my buddy was using NO. 4 Red Kahle hooks or Croaker Hooks.
We had problems with our leaders getting pulled apart at the crimp. They were the black 18" steel coated leaders from H & H tackle. Almost every one failed with these large reds. Some of the red hooks were straightened as well.
Reds ranged from 24.5 thru 28. Released plenty of trophy sized reds in the 30 inch class. Not to mention all those that got away. The bite for us started at 10:30pm Friday and lasted until 5am Saturday. Someone switched the bite off. No real trout to be found either. Some Snapper were present, but nothing to brag about.
After loosing all our leaders we tied on some 30 or 40 lb shock leader material that were snapped as well. When the line would pop, it sounded as though we were firing a 22 rifle. The action was awesome.
In all my years of fishing I have never caught a double limit of red fish. It was nice to experience the red bite as we did. I have pics if someone will post them for me, that would be great. I also have a small video clip of the reds schooling by the ferry landing on the Aransas side.

Saw some people throwing lines from the bench next to the Port A North ferry landing last Friday . Seems like that can be a hot spot for reds. _________________ Mike |

Crimped sleeves are why god invented knots! I very rarely have any terminal tackle problems when I'm down on the coast fighting big reds, kings or whatever and I use nothing but GOOD knots. When I need a short strand of wire for toothy critters I make my own leaders quickly with wire and a haywire twist, finished off with a drop of super glue. _________________ Dave

take your time and let the reel do the work for you, i.e. use your drag. If your line is breaking and it sounds like a 22 going off you've got way to much tension on the line. The only time I ever create that noise is when I have to break myself off from being hung up. _________________ Posted by

What Beachbum said. Try a Palomar or double palomar knot. I have never had that knot fail. I used to crimp my own leaders 'til I learned that knot. Also learn the haywire twist and you will never buy another Kingfish leader. A little practice goes a long way when it comes to LANDING fish.

P.S. I am jealous. Haven't gotten the chance to get a line wet since I ran into Rabbit out in the Gulf. _________________ You only live once. Do it right! |

Hey, Hey, I already learned something new today and the sun is not even up yet. Love that haywire twist.
But serriously, Bigdaddy1, you must back off that drag as long as you have open water and let it wear those big bull Reds out. I usualy break down any reel that will be used down there and dress the drag washers with a good silicone grease. This will keep the drag from sticking and stuttering which is doom when a big red that is still green and makes a power run. We've caught 'em up to 39" long on 17# test mono and light bass tackle. We were throwing Little Georges at schooling reds and having aa ball. |

Guys, I couldn't back down the drag at all. I was casting no more than 20' in front of me to structure that I would get hung up on or get cut off on.
The spot is deep and there is a concrete structure below the surface and the fish knew how to break off for sure. Kinda like fighting a Grouper trying to get in his hole. As soon as they would pull enough line away from me to get around the corner it was all over.
The technique there was to fish as light as posible. Little to no weight at all. My buddy had the steel leaders and suggested I try them since I was breaking off, but when we both started loosing leaders there was nothing we could do but hang on. I carolina rigged my leader with 1/16oz egg sinker to help cast my shock leader after I broke all the leaders we had.
I fish with 8lb big game tied to a swivle tied to 25lb Flourocarbon 18" tied to No. 3 Black Circle hook. When casting short you don't need a egg sinker with this carolina rig. This is my standard setup. My knots don't fail.
I started using the shock leader to help get the fish in faster but it killed my casting distance. If a weight was used you would get hung up on structure because the bait would fall too fast before the bite. Part of the technique there was the slow falling bait and a few cranks of the handle. You know, like you fish plastics, except, don't let it hit the bottom there.
PM me for the spot. _________________ Paul S Perez
