I got this nice email from RedEd

Hello Tyler,

Here is proof that "old salts" may physically leave Mother Earth but they are still with us on some level. Those of us that knew Artie Hebert knew just how special he really was. Artie quit building rods several years back. I begged him to build me just one more rod, but he would not do it. He gladly sold me all of his rodbuilding equipment and spent hour upon hour passing on his knowledge. I quickly picked up the trade but I still wanted an Artie original.....nope! One day my son Noah and I were paying Artie a visit and Noah asked him if he would build him a rod. To my surprise he said ,"Sure.....you can pick it up the next time you come over to mow my yard." Well, we show up the following week and there it sat. A PERFECT spinning rod for a young man made on Artie's last old school Breakaway blank. I turned green with envy and the old fart looked me straight in the eyes and gave me a priceless wink. Not only was it a beautiful rod but, he threw in a brand new Penn 4300SS reel. An absolutely perfect combo for Noah....it fit like a glove! Now, on to the fishing story...

I recently had a week off so I decided to take my boys down for a week of fishing. We arrived to almost ideal conditions and loaded up on some of the most beautiful live shrimp that I have seen in years. We hit PINS and proceeded to slay 16-18" whiting. Yummy......fresh fishsticks for me and the boys. Well, as luck would have it, tropical storm Dolly raised her ugly head the very next day and proceeded to wipe the surf out. We spent the rest of the week trying to find some fishable water to no avail. Noah was bummed becasue all he wanted was to catch a fish big enough to make Artie happy. On our way out of town we decided to go through Rockport because I wanted to show the boys the "Big Tree." We also picked up some live shrimp in hopes of finding some fishable water in Rockport. After checking out the trees, I decided to follow the road down to the water and I found a spot that was worth a shot. Noah quickly dug out the biggest and baddest shrimp in the bucket and proceeded to thread him on his hook with the precision of a surgeon......just like Artie taught him. First cast and he is immediately hooked up to a good fish. After a 2-3 minute"struggle," Noah drug this bad boy up on the sand. First words out of his mouth were, "This would make Artie smile!" I could not help but feel the old fart was smiling down on us. This one is for you Artie. Not a day goes by that we don't think about you! You may be gone but you will never be forgotten..........RedEd

Is this the same Art that used to build rods for "Tackle Town" ? If so he is the one who taught me to build. Lost contact after soo many years.

memories are made of this is an old song line. what better to reward a young man than to build a personal rod for him. congrats to him & remember the old fart forever.

This Artie never worked for anyone but himself. He only worked to support his Budweiser and Winston habits for that matter. Thank you for posting this for me, Tyler.

Thank you IMS! It has literally been years since we have caught one this big. I cleaned her and rolled her in a powdered pecan crust. Pan fried in butter......OMG.....Not only do I love catching them, but they are delicious! I hope to see a surge in their population!!

Thank you all for the kind words. My son has taken each one of your kind words to heart. He has emailed a link to all of his buddies!

Artie lives on in the lifes of many. Karleen is holding onto his ahes and when the time is right we will release his remains on the perfect outgoing tide. I will be sure and post up the date since it would be near impossible to notify all who knew him. Thanks again Tyler. I've been starting my day with Corpusfishing for many years and have made many friendships here. Even though you have 9 years on me, you still rock Laughing
