my friend came down from austin and the plan was the mansfield jetties but we chickened out with all the weed and off colored water. we decided to head to shamrock in the yaks early in the morning. got on the water right at sun up:
we pounded it out until about noon throwing topwaters and soft plastics with not much to show other than some dink trout, rat reds, and this lone keeper flounder:
saw some guides catching a few keeper reds over sand flats on live bait for those of you headed that way. we called it quits around noon to rest up for the humble channel because we couldn't go out like that with one keeper fish! rested, picked up some shrimp and got to the humble about 10. we immediately found LOTS of grass, not much current, higher than expected winds, and a skipjack infestation. we stuck it out and inbetween skipjacks and 10lbs of grass we both pounded out limits of trout. these lucky guys got to go home with us for sustenance, the rest got released so we can catch them again someday:
the majority of these fish were males in the 14-18" range. the trout are there if you're willing to work for them, free-line live shrimp from the shadow of the bridge and when it hits the light fish on! hopefully its not a skipjack or some grass!! |
