|

Has anyone had problems with their E-tec overheating. I just purchased an E-tec 250 hp and the overheat alarm goes off if you exceed 44 mph. The dealer modified my inlet screens to hopefully fix the problem.
Any input would be appreciated. |

dirtdobbers, sand in the heads, water pump, lift tube, head gasket alignment, water pressure hose, thermostat, computer, bent prop shaft, wrong prop pitch, wrong motor on wrong boat, driving style, or just plain bad engineering.
sure its not the oil pressure alarm?
drive it till it blows up and get another one. its still under warranty, right? _________________

| What kind of boat is it on. I've noticed that the skinny water boats that have the motor jacked up high tend to have that problem. |

I have a 50hp Etec (1 year old now with 66 hrs) on my Vannoy. It's an old flat bottom boat. When I first had the motor hung I had no problems and then one day it started overheating. I took it in (since I have warranty) and they made it so that it takes less water pressure to cool it. We also lowered the motor as low as it would go. I do not have a jack plate or a tunnel to make use of one. The biggest thing for me was the addition of a pressure gauge on the console. Since my motor shoots water out the back, I can't see it. The water pressure gauge lets me know when I don't have pressure and I never get to the point of overheating anymore. Lately if I lose pressure is because I grassed up. It has been happening in my buddy's boat too (he doesn't have an etec). I have heard the bigger etecs do the same and have been cured by the modification of inlet screens. Good luck and keep us/me posted. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

Island Mike,
What was done to lower the required water pressure for adequate cooling?
I would expect they drilled out the water jacket exhaust ports where you get adequate volume and delivery with reduced pressure. Just curious.
The old 19 Stoner is sporting a 200 yr model 150hp Ficht(last batch made before bombardier bought them out) and I run a hydraulic jack plate with a set of extensions on top of that . I have no tunnel and have never had any overheat problems. I have ALWAYS had a water pressure gauge on any motor bigger that a 40hp. My good buddy Capt'n Mike Singleterry gave me that tip nearly 30 years go!

Jeff, as it was explained to me by the guys at gulf coast, they simply changed a spring out that dictates how much water pressure it takes to cool the motor. The smaller spring doesn't need as much pressure to compress......if you can be sold that idea (cause I kinda can't but it worked ). I think what really did the trick was lowering the motor so it could get more water. I don't have any problems now unless it's grassed up. I would like to see your boat sometime so I can have a look at how you moved it back. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

Amen on the water pressure gauge. I have a 115 Johnson Faststrike. Great engine, tons of power for it's size. Will push my 19' Blue Wave at almost 50mph and pop out of the water as quick as any boat around. Last summer at Mansfield I apparently ran through some weed and ruined my motor. The heat alarm was working intermitently. New heads and pistons and a .30 over bore. Just about everything else new was also done and a water pressure guage was added. Now, I have a backup to my heat alarm that works like a champ. If I had had it last summer it would have saved me several thousand dollars. By the way, the engine is even quicker now with the bore job. _________________ Big Ed

At the time it was recommended to me, the cost was more than I wanted to spend, but I'm sure glad I listened to everyone and had it put on. I think it's a necessity on e-tecs since the water discharge is out the back. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

Call up Gulf Coast Marine, they seem to have fixed the problem. They told me that they had a bunch of them overheating until they figured out the problem. I bought a 150 e-tec from them and I run with the jack plate all the way up in my 20ft tunnel. My water pressure gauage reads that it has good pressure while I do this. I know they put different water intake screens and something else to the motor, but not sure what.

they had a seance and exorcised the demons, and then used voodoo magic to prevent the return of the bad spirits.
or something like that. Marty (and his crew) can definitely fix some motors. _________________

| They fixed the problem by increasing the volume at the inlet screens. Time will tell. |

Some great advice and humor. I just wanted to say that at 44 mph my cheeks start to make noise that would make it difficult to hear the alarm! I guess I gotta fix that. Any suggestions from the experts? |
