I forgot about this one, I guess it happend too recently.
About six weeks ago I wish fishing at one of our local West Texas lakes and thought I'd caught the bottom. I went to break the line and whatever it was start to slide toward me. I kept reeling and pulling and finally pulled in a Abu 4600 attached to a 7' medimum action Castaway rod.
They had obviously been down there a while. I soaked the reel in CLR and it works great now. Spool is pitted out but still works fine. I'll replace it if I can find out where to buy one. |

Fishing lake CC as a kid, I was fishing bottom with bread soaked in mustard for blues (yes, this works really, really well - it turns into a dough which is molded around a treble hook).
I got a good hit and start realing in. It was heavy, but not bouncing very hard. Get the line in and there is a little 12inch blue cat. He has another hook in his mouth attached to a trot line. Pull it in to find 8 more cats, 1 over 15 lbs, easy, and at the very end a broken milk jug, that was once a float, now filled with water. No weight connected though, and I couldn't find a frayed or cut line anywhere!
Turned out my grandfather knew who's line it was from the jug markings, and called him up! I had to give up all the fish! The guy didn't even offer me a single one! _________________ GOBZA!!!

Seabass, the sargassum fish's head is as broad as a toads', just like that of other members of the anglerfish family. A long slender head with fins attached makes it sound more like a seahorse. Curled up it would look like a patch of sargassum, where it often occurs.
That lobster-like crustacean sounds like a pistol shrimp. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

Hey Johnny,
You are right. It was definitely not a sargassum fish that i saw. I found some pics of it on the web, and noted the difference. I found a pic of a sea dragon :

The thing I saw actually kinda looked like this, however from what i've read the sea dragon ain't local to the gulf. What I probably saw was a seahorse just swimming in a ball of weed. It was night time and I was using a light from my floundering rig. Cool to see, whatever it was..

| It might have been a sea Robin. My 2 strangest catches were a violet goby in the cast net @ a boat ramp on loyola beach & a 2' gator in my favorite bass hole on a blck/chrtrse spinner bait. |

| Strangest fish I have ever caught was a redfish with no spot on either side. I caught it on PINS about ten years ago. |

I've always wondered about that, I figured they were out there. |

| I caught a little Moray eel years ago. At least I think it was. When I took it off the hook, it turned around and bit the crap out of me several times. It was a little green sucker about 16 inches long. |

Not so much what I caught but what I found and a quick story of being caught!
Found a Lancet Fish washed up on the beach in Adak Alaska when I was a kid -- weird looking sucker. An eagle had tore out a bit of meat on the side and it was barely alive when we found it. Also found a very large squid (about 6 feet) washed up in a tide pool about 2 miles or so away (not on the same day). Was around 1981 I think and we cut the tentacles off and used them for bait. We were just stoked at the free bonanza of bait we found!!
Last story is also from Adak (I really miss that place): Every summer, the sea run Dolly Varden would come in close to the beach either to spawn or chase Pacific Sandlance (we called em candlefish). Anyway, I was getting ready to haul a nice one in when over my shoulder I heard whoosh, whoosh, whoosh and an eagle grabbed my fish. Drag screaming, I held on, shocked as hell and praying the damn thing was not hooked. I guess he felt the tension of the line because the eagle dropped the fish and I reeled in a tore up Dolly Varden -- had big ole talon slashes in both sides. Fried it up anyways! _________________ "Careful man, there's a beverage here!" -- The Dude |

I love catching Sea Run Dollies. My dad and I fished for them in the early 80's in WA in Swinomish Channel. A beautiful and tasty gamefish. Later you could not keep them because of the Bull Trout regs. What a shame. I think the biggest dad got was a 5.5lber. |

Tyler: Yes sir, those things are tasty. A 5.5 lb Dolly is huge by comparison to what I ever caught. Used to nail em with yellow Rooster Tails, salmon eggs and sandlance. I sure miss AK!!! _________________ "Careful man, there's a beverage here!" -- The Dude |

That was a big one. Most were around 2lbs or so. I love the beautiful pink spots on them.
Sea Run Cutts a great too! Ah this time of year and especially in August I miss the Northwest. Not a better place to be on earth in August. That is unless the fish are biting down here of course. |

Tyler, what was the reasoning behind the regs you cited as preventing you from keeping sea-run Dollies? I'd always heard the Dollies, particularly the ones that weren't sea-runners, had a bad reputation for eating the eggs of other salmonids. Why not protect the bull trout by keeping the pressure on its egg predators? _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

[quote: Strangest fish I have ever caught was a redfish with no spot on either side. I caught it on PINS about ten years ago.]
I have caught a couple of reds at an area lake and have heard they are a brown drum. This was told to me by a guide who fishes the lake. Never confirmed it though, not sure if its the same for saltwater drum. I remember a couple of years back we were fishing bobhall and caught a 17 or 18in croaker. At 1st we thought it was a red with no spots since it looked like one so we decided to throw it back to be on the safe side as it was under, after we threw it back i thought it might have been a huge croaker i later checked the pics and thats what it was..That fish was probably better of living anyways.
One time fishing a lake near town and caught something big, i kept reeling and it kept coming up slowly but surely, after a short fight my catch turned out to be a kitchen sink filled with water. Caught it on 15lb test!!!
fishing with a buddy one time and he reeled in a rod/reel also at a lake, he cleaned it up with water from the lake put some bait on it and throw it out, it must of hit the fish on the head but before the boat even settled he caught a 15lb cat on the same rod he just caught.
Not very long ago we were fishing under the bridge near red dot, i lent my friend one of my poles Penn 4400ss and told him to loosen the drag as if a big fish hit it wouldnt go over board. He didnt think this was true and i told him if it does we are going straight to academy and buying a new one. He also was using his live liner. Well no more than about 20 minutes after i told him i turned my head for a quick second and hear something hitting the boat. I turned around only to see both of my friends looking at me crazy. I looked down and there is his reel and mine nowhere around. Of course i was a bit upset since that was the 1st thing i told him. Anyhow there was another boat on the other side of the bridge and about 45 minutes after this happend they drift up to us holding my rod/reel asking if we lost something. They caught my rod, but the thing that P**sed me off was they wanted our biggest fish in return. Since we only had about 4 at the time my friends instead offered them 20$$. After they mentioned the $$ they wanted that plus the fish. Which my friend agreed. I was furious as how someone would be that ignorant. If that was me on the other hand i would have just given it back without wanting something in return. Maybe thats why they didnt catch any fish bad karma.
Last but not least we were at a lake on time and one of the boat launches is made for bigger boats. Supposedly theres some drop off if u back up too far anyhow this small p/u came with a small boat to launch there. He tried his best getting out but the 2wd didnt cut it and after spinning the tires his truck slipped back and went completely under water. They had to get a tractor to pull him out. Hope he had insurance.
