Yesterday while fishing in Packery, we managed to catch a couple hardheads. I normally use a rag to remove them from the hook, but this time I didn't have a rag handy so barehanded the fish. I didn't get pricked by the fins at any time, nor did I have any cuts on my hands the slime could have entered, but towards the end of the fishing trip I began feeling quite sick. Earlier that day I felt as healthy as a horse. It got worse after getting to sleep. I came really close to going to the ER actually, but decided not to as my fever started dropping after taking a couple advil. This morning, I still feel pretty bad, but I'm not feverish.

I'm wondering if it's possible to have developed an allergy to just handling the things. Anyone here allergic to them?

Sounds more like heat exhaustion and/or dehyrdation.

You didn't say what your age is, but have you been checked for diabetes? I'm a type II diabetic and when my sugar drops too low, I get weak and shaky and don't feel good. But it also sounds like maybe you got too much sun and got over heated or you just came down with the flu.

It's not the hardheads.

I didn't get out there until 5pm, and it really didn't seem that hot, but I guess afternoon heat can be deceiving. In any event, I'm slowly feeling better now. I probably should have gone to the ER last night and got a fill of IV fluid though.

I have been checked for diabetes as it does run in my family...so far, so good at 33.

Did you eat any fresh tomatoes on anything before going fishing? There has been a problem with them and salmonella making people sick.

The fever tells me there was a viral element to your sickness. The hardheads are probably a coincidence. Next time try a counter this hardhead poisoning by ingesting some gaftop slime... I here it it will fix ya right up Laughing

I also went out to packery channel Saturday, about 8am-1pm. Caught 1 hardhead, but used a rag to take off hook. I felt fine while I was there, but later that day, around 7 or 8, I start feeling weak and feels like my body temp is going up. All day Sunday I'm in bed with 101 temp. Ended up going to the ER and they just said it was a common cold, gave me a shot and some antibiotics and sent me on my way..... just wierd how you got sick after you went there too.

All I know is that after a day of catching nothing but hardheads - I don't feel so great either.

Hope you get to the cause of that.

The cure? Use Lures LOL!!! Nothing makes me feel better than to fly fish my hard heads into the rocks...until the hard heads become soft...Not like there's a shortage of 'em...DON'T leave your dead HH's on the Beach - throw them in the dunes let the yotes eat em. and for all our sake, don't leave em on the Jetties either!

I guess I'm a big softie for those things as I always try and release them unharmed. Throwing them into the dunes is a surefire way to get stuck through the foot the next time I'm having 2p. Besides, I think it's technically illegal to leave any fish for dead.
