Going to Braunig friday afternoon in brothers boat. Any suggestions on sweet spots or advice too hook up with some nice reds or cats? I have fished the dam wall and hot water discharge in a kayak but dont know any other spots on the lake. And, does fishing the hot water discharge in the summer produce fish?

I can't stand fishing the discharge in warm weather, makes me think of catching 3 eyed fish or something.

Anyhow, I only know how to fish at night for cats and reds. Catch some tilapia with the cast net and after dark fish in the shallows, never fails. Other than that troll around tossing spoons at the crack of dawn for some good hybrid action. If the action is slow during daylight hours try trolling some deep diving crankbaits around different depths until you find some fish.

My favorite of area lakes is fishing Calaveras for some reason we have always done way better there off the bank or boat than at braunig. At braunig if im in a boat we usually always start at the discharge on both sides. Usually try the one one the same side as the entrance, anchor up to the buoys and cast as far towards the inlet as possible, I always either us crawfish for reds or chicken liver for cats and stripers. When the water is discharging that seems the be the best time to catch them. If not bites there we will try the other side of the lake ( outlet ). If u have a down rigger try along the walls with deep divers or spoons, if u get lucky u will pick up reds or stripers this way. I will share my secrect about calaveras at night if u go to the crappie wall, use the lemon rig setup mentioned in previous threads, i use the water bottle with glowsticks at night to see, rig it up where ur line is about 15-20 feet deep, use shrimp!!!!!! if i have crawfish and shrimp i will put a small piece of shrimp with the crawfish and u are pretty much gauranteed to catch reds. If no shrimp crawfish will work alone, I cant recall a time in a long time where we didnt come back with atleast 3 or 4, and the most caught at night in about 4-5 hours being around 25-30. Something we do time to time is when fishing at night, we will throw juglines for cats then go fish for reds to kill time and later go pick up your catch, u wont believe how big the catfish are in those lakes, get the biggest shad u can find and put it on a treble hook. My buddy caugth a cat that was 3/4 in of the lake record juglining. He caught it and went back fishing for reds, the next day he took it home and his dad told him to take it back to be weighed. The guy in the office told him if he would have brought it in when he caught it he would have either broke the record or tied as the fish had lost weight by the time he took it in.....none the less my friend wasnt even fazed as he said there are bigger in there and eventually he will catch one. The biggest i have got was 34in on a jugline, actually caugth 2 the same size on the same jugline

You have to love those Calaveras reds. They love crawfish and big shad.

unfortunately u need a boat or kayak to get to the wall. Not sure the exact distance but i would say about 200 yards or so almost directly across from the main boat launch. We have caught them during the day also but the evening/night seems to be the best. There are several good areas at Calaveras off the bank as well, if your in the right spot and have the right bait you have a very good chance of catching something. If Given the chance and in a boat something ive done is drive close to the bank finding the drop offs and knowing the different depths. Then later u will know different spots to fish the bank.

Nice Catch Rudy. That is definetly a great catch off the bank!!!! They may have been short in size but they sure do look mighty healthy. There sure is lots of bait to eat in those lakes most of the reds u catch there show it by how fat they are.
