Look for the water temps to reach 74 degrees. This seems to be some sort of magic number when the fishing really "goes off" for the rest of the summer.

Don't get me wrong, there are some good fish to be had before the water temp hits 74, but I have never experienced one of those "its on" days.

You'd really be surprised at the fish trolling around the rigs. I had a run on 40lb test with the drag clamped down just under the break point, and there was no stopping what I hooked, it just swam for Cuba and kept going, and fast. Have no idea what it was, but didn't fight like anything I'd ever hooked before. Not likely to be a pelagic. as there was no aerial display, but you never know.

I have seen one and only one sailfish jump out past the 3rd bar when the blue water was up to the shore and crystal clear. There was absolutley no weed in the water, and it was a really hot day in August with no wind. Might have went 4 foot tops. Just thought that was odd.

As far as the limits of your boat, run the bay in various conditions until you find the limit. Those boats are really designed for the bays, and I would be hesitant to take it out past the jetties on any but the best blue bird days of summer, as that is not the boat you want to be in if the weather pulls a surprise change, or a "big" boat runs right past you full speed pushing a 3 foot plus wake.

Was out with Mike Elbert on his 21" at the rigs on a clear summer day it was alright. There were a couple waves we hit running out and back that made me think I was going flying off the front. Laughing But I had faith in Mike's driving ability and both times he cut back on the throttle at the right times. It was a blast. So take it slower than you might think you need to be moving as a pitch and roll is easier than you think in those all around bay fishing boats.

Used to be able to see the Kings off the Jetties in Late April or the first part of May.

You have not experienced offshore until you have a couple of aerials as some of the fish do, but warning, be prepared for the landing.

The landing is not as majestic as the fish's landing.

Quote from Big Jon: " But I had faith in Mike's driving ability". That says it all, most boats can handle way more than the driver. If you can get comfortable close in driving in some pretty rough seas no matter what your heading, you will be much safer and comfortable offshore. I would humbly recommend running around at the mouth of the Aransas Pass jetties with a STRONG onshore/sideshore [the typical direction] wind and an outgoing tide as a good training ground! If that makes you woosy or worse, well......................

I used to work as a deckhand out of Port A. I have seen blackfin tuna be caught right at the 200 ft drop off. In June I have seen a a big blue marlin tearing up some dorado about 30-35 miles out. I remember the smacs were hear heavy in mid march last spring. I think the kings were not too far behind them.

It all depends on when the clean water shows up. I remember catching a red snapper at NPJ about three years ago or whenever they first started to build it. You really never know until the clean clear summer water starts to show up.

Just an idea, about a week before you go post your trip here and see if you can get a buddy boat. I head down about twice a month and would be happy to have a second boat along.

So got the boat down to the slip this weekend. attemped offshore. It was an experience all right. We went out on Friday and it was 6-7 ft seas we were told. So we went out in a 18' mako in that, obviously decided to turn around but we figured out how to manuver in it. Lots of aerials as the fish do and the landng was indeed the least fun part as stated. Got out past the jetties attempted to make it around to anchor up and said yea right.. Cant wait to go back down in the summertime when its more realistic for our lil guy to make it out.

yeah this weekend was a bust, as late as friday some weather services were calling saturday 2-4 but it was much worse. My advice is to be an amateur weatherman. After awhile you'll be better than the so-called professionals. Before every trip I check weather underground, national weather service, NOAA, NOO wave models, ADDS winds forecasts, and the hourly updates for the 42020 buoy the night before and morning of. The most important variables are wind speed and direction. Know exactly what to expect when you are out there and learn to read the indicators of changing weather patterns.

And if you are dumb enough to go out when it's rough (like me!) keep in mind you will get much worse gas mileage in heavy seas. On flat seas my 19' gets about 3.5 mpg but going straight into 3-5s I get about 2.

I agree about practicing by the jetties. Get to know you boat really well because you are trusting it with your life. I kept my boat within a few miles of shore for the first 4 months I owned it before I was willing to go 30+ miles.

I have heard 75 is the magic temp for dorado. You should be able to catch plenty of chickens on weedlines and floating junk within 20 miles. mmm, tasty. I wouldn't target pelagics that close but have a few islanders and yo-zuris pre-rigged in case you see any.

and get sea-tow! They'll come get you up to 40nm.

Thanks for all that. yea it was definotely not 2-4 s out there. BUt looking foward to the summet months when its a breeze to get out and around with 1-3s instead of trying 6-7s and hook up on kings right off the jetties like everyone talks about

I would get sea tow and a good marine radio. I take my 19' Kenner out all the time to the near rigs. Always in good weather and if you see any large clouds building anywhere, go back in. I would not go without a good radio. If the kings and Spanish are around, you won't need to go far.
