Headed out the last two days and am just gonna post both here:

Tuesday got out there about 5:30. There was a lot of grass but a lot of people as well. At first, the only ones i saw catching anything were guys spearfishing. And they were destroying the Sheepshead, both on the channel and ocean side. Didn't see anybody else catch a whole lot, although everyone i talked to had caught something. One guy caught two slot reds, a couple other guys one apiece. I was fishing with live shrimp on a sorta-lemon-rig. Had a couple bites, but eventually switched over to a fish finder rig. Managed one 16" red, a small croaker, a pinfish and a gafftop... Saw one guy land an upper slot Black Drum at about 7:30-8:00, but that was it til 8:45 when i left.

Wednesday: Got out there about 1:00 today and it was a completely different story. I was the only one out there for a while, then a few others trickled in and out, w/o much to show for it. The grass was gone, but apparently so were the fish. I was using a slip float one guy showed me on Tuesday. He'd said he'd been having a ton of luck with it the last few days on reds. I had two quick bites, but both cut off my 20# Flouro just above the hook a few seconds after the bite. To fix that, i put on a wire leader i'd salvaged from creating the slipping cork. It worked. Well, sort of. I didn't get cut off anymore, but that was because i didn't get anymore bites. Eventually switched over to a fish finder rig. First bite- cut off. put on the wire and caught a nice Pompano. However, that was it for the rest of the day. Had another bite, but eventually left about 5:30-6:00ish after i lost all of my hooks to the rocks.

One guy came out about 4:30 to spearfish. Was there about 10 mins and shot a huge Sheepshead, but had to take off to see his dad. A couple times i saw schools of something busting all over the surface. They weren't interested in my shrimp or another guy's Gotcha. I think they might have been Spanish, although I haven't heard of anybody catching them out there recently. I'm also guessing that's what kept cutting me off. Oh well. At least it was a gorgeous day, the wind wasn't too bad, and the water looked decent.

I'm pretty sure the Sp. macs were cutting you off as there is alot of them, thought mostly small to med size around BHP. I caught a bunch of them Tues. afternoon, but did get a nice 24"er for supper (filleted and pan fried in garlc butter) all on a Mannolure. I lost 2 lures even with 27 lb wire leader. Those small ones like to hit where it is tied on the main line.

Sotx23- The water was the clearest I'd ever seen it at Packery. I could probably see down 7-10 ft

FB Phil- I thought switching to wire would keep em from cutting you off. Oh well.

Chuck 3000- I just wish I was doing more catching for the time I've spent Fishing. 2-4 Sat w/ only 5-10 out of the SE... State waters for some snapper / kings/ cobia? I want to bring some up to my fiance's friends in Lubbock, but I'm out of Mingo...
