Last night I went to Bob Hall pier to do a little trout fishing as I have for over 40 years... I managed to catch about a dozen or some keepers on shrimp and jigs (retained a few for lunch today)... But that's not what I really wanted to talk about. What I want to discuss is the condition of the pier. As everyone knows it cost a dollar per person and a dollar for each rod. My observations while fishing caused me to wonder who is suppose to maintain the pier... There must 6 or 7 lights burned out, trash containers full of beer cans, and trash blowing into the water and of course dead fish and seaweed everywhere...What's up??? Who recieves the 3 bucks that I paid and who's job is it to fix the lights???? Rolling Eyes

i was there friday and saturday night and noticed the same thing. I remember going to bob hall pier and can only remember a handful of times paying. And even then the pier was managed better. Looks like someone is pocketing some money!! Thank god its not too expensive. It was also a good thing the crowd wasnt too bad or should i say a good thing there were too many people targeting trout since all the lights werent working.

Remember, as of its reopening, there are new people running it. It is officially a city pier, since Corpus christi awards that contract, so I would contact the city about the conditions.

If Corpus Christi's media has trouble shooting correspondants, I'm sure a call to them would get the ball rolling. We have some here in SA that do a pretty good job.

It is the county's pier. If it was the city's every light would be out or there would be a Joe's Crab Shack at the end and no fishing would be allowed. You would not want the locals interacting with the tourist.

Just a note, I sent directions to this message thread to Nueces County Commissioner Chuck Cazalas who is responsible for this area. Let's see if he responds to the citizens. I'll report back. The OFFICIALS need to know what is going on and maybe things can get fixed. One can only hope.
Keep on fishin'

Chuck Cazalas is a pretty good guy. I would be surprised if he does not get the ball rolling.

Took my Brother in Law over to Bob Hall Pier a couple of weekends ago. As a kidand into College, he used to come from SA to BHP often, but hasn't been there in 15 years. He was disgusted and commented it was a crime for the pier to be so filthy and trashy. "Doesn't anyone wash it down or clean it?", he asked me. Not being a regular to the pier, I didn't have an answer, . . . .but it was nasty that Sunday. I sure wouldn't take my wife there. At least once a day, the County or whoever is responsible should at least sweep the pier down and wash it off. That is not asking too much considering our tax money goes to maintain it.

Diehard, I forwarded your original post to Mike Baird at the Caller-Times two days ago. This is what he emailed back today:

"Okay here's the skinny, an electrician was there yesterday repairing the half dozen dysfunctional light fixtures. Most had some wiring shorts, and now have been rewired. I'm giving a breakdown of the income from pier entry fees in my Monday column and telling you why there has been less trash control than should have been.
The great news my column will break is that the park is getting new bathrooms, six figures worth. Also there is no drinking allowed on the pier, so I'm reminding readers of that. Glad you caught some trout, when am I invited for the fish fry?
Mike B"

Good job Johnny French. Even though it's been years since I have fished BHP, I know they recently spent a good amount of $$$ for renovations and that a good number of people do enjoy fishing there. It would be a shame to let it become an eyesore or a "Pink Flamingo" because of lack of routine maintenance. Cool

Mr. French,

I was there last night, and the only lights fixed were the ones on the sought side of the "T" if my memory serves me correct. That leaves several along the pier still needing repair.

Perhaps the wiring has been fixed and now they need light bulbs. I am thankful work is being done.

I will be out there tonight, and I will check to see if all the lights are working.

I did notice that the water vavles had been replaced and are working great.

I will let you know tomorrow.

FISHED BOB HALL FRIDAY, ALL THE LIGHTS ARE WORKING. THE TRASH IS STILL NOT BEING PICKED UP REGULARLY. GOT THERE ABOUT 7AM, THE PEOPLE WHO FISHED THURSDAY NIGHT MUST NOT KNOW THERE ARE NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ALLOWED. THERE WERE BEER CANS ALL OVER THE PLACE.
