Once again I couldn't pass up the light winds this morning so I headed out to do some kayak fishing in Nueces Bay. I fished along the causeway, around the bird island and then hit a few reefs out in the middle of the bay. Between the three spots I landed my limit of 3 redfish(22", 24", 26"). The first red was caught on a white Gulp shrimp rigged on a flutter hook, the second and third reds were caught on 1/8 jighead rigged with rootbeer/goldflake Riptide mullet. The water is still looking great and Nueces Bay has really been producing the redfish this past week. The trout bite has slowed a bit even at night, but the redfish bite has been picking up the slack bigtime. I really have been noticing a lot more guide boats in Nueces Bay this past week, the word must be out. Here are a few picks....

Yeah, the guides have been there for a week or two.....they are soaking a lot of croakers, they pour them out in the driveway when they leave for the seagulls. Careful what you tell them guys, they are major potlickers.................as if I wasn't. Laughing

The fish pictured above were all caught in the front bay near the causeway. The back bay is an AWSOME spot and ranks very high among my favorite places to fish. As far as maps of Nueces "Back" Bay go, they don't exist to my knowlege at least none that show all depths and reefs back there. When I venture back there I take my gps along which I have marked a clear "safe" path on. I also use satallite photos to get an idea of where im going in the marsh. Here is a satallite of the marsh and here is a pic of the last redfish I pulled out of there...

My father in law started taking me to back bay in the late seventies. He didn't need a gps, knew every reef and piling back there. He amazed me with his ability to pull up in the middle of the bay on a windy choppy day and have us casting on a submerged reef. He learned it when he was in high school in the forties. He's gone now, but he was local legend. He taught the bay to his kids and grandkids, they knew the names of the reefs like they knew the names of their favorite ballplayers. There is a whole group of back bay fishermen that have fished the back bay for years. I still go probably 3 or 4 times a month, sometimes I catch a keeper red, sometimes I don't. My house is near the river so it is an easy trip for me. Preferred boat is aluminum jon boat, the idea is to maneuver around shell reefs and flats, not over them. It is a treacherous place at times, I've seen a few transoms knocked out, and too many skegs and props damaged to count. Walked out of there through the salt flats at least twice. We've seen many people run aground hard this year, once where someone was thrown from the boat. But GPS use is changing the back bay, my wife and I were out there Saturday and it looked like a small navy out there. The fact that what was once an uncrowded fishing spot has changed didn't bother me so much as the amount of guides back there, running from reef to reef desperate to get a redfish or a drum for their clients. A 22' guide boat cranked up and ran right over the series of reefs we were headed for Saturday afternoon, but it was evident that almost every visible reef had probably been fished that weekend. We managed only rat reds, stingrays and hardheads for our efforts Saturday.
The recent clear water and calm winds have made it more hospitable for newbies, and the high tide brought in the quality fish, but in a few weeks it will go back to the rough, choppy, hard south wind blowing, mean little bay it usually is. It always does.
