I've caught only one Red since 2004...
Going through my journal, I've caught over 253 drum since then, and all were those wormy Black Drum.....
Am I doing something wrong? No, I aint giving up the GPS or my drum hole....So don't try, potlicker! ....(Even if I told you, you have five hundred-to-two thousand feet of bulkhead to work, and only one spot next to oyster pods will produce consistently.....) Of course, it could be more bulkhead! |

Crab is usually best for fall fishing, right now they might prefer live mullet. That's always been my favorite Redfish bait, when I'm using bait _________________ It's a conspiracy, I tell ya,, There's no such thing as being too drunk to fish !!

| We catch them on the jetties every year. Check my post on the "If no one else is saying it". Those pics are from this last weekend in Mansfield. Those were from a boat but the jetties in Port A and other places produce big reds year round. There is a spot on one of the jetties that will produce bulls year round, it's almost a for sure deal. |

The South Jetty in Port A is the closest to a sure thing for me.
I come down at least 4 times a year and can always catch at least 1 bull red per trip. Mullet, Piggy Perch, Croaker, live or dead. Spooners work pretty good also.
Keep an eye on the tide charts and when the tide is moving in or out, you can probably snag a hungry one on its way through the channel. |

I was born in Corpus but live a few hundred miles up the coast...I've tried mullet, shad (Menhaden), and other stuff I haven't verified with TPWD ( Wink) .
I understand anomilies, and abnormalities....but under my current state of duress....I'm willing to pay 500 bucks to land a single Redfish in the 30 lb class.....
I'm a bit delusional....But don't doubt me......It doesn't matter where i fish.....Big Uglies love me...nearly 300 have graced me in passing time! |

If you are fishing the surf, try mullet heads and whiting if you can't get decent size mullet. Live finger mullet work great to. One thing I do is I cut about halfway through it at the tail. This makes it appear more distressed and lets some blood into the water. This will also work in the bays. But, I have caught some bad boys on pony mullet heads. Just use a circle hook and hook it through both lips. Fresher the better. Since I don't get down as much as I would like, I tend to stick with what has worked in the past and this does. This will also work well for the other drum. So... maybe you need a new spot.
We cleaned up last October on reds in the surf. So, if you still have this problem in Oct. you can join us on PINS. We usually throw out a couple of rigs for Reds and the rest for Pomps. |

| The Bull reds i have all caught from what i can think of have all been caught on live or cut mullet.....to me it is the bait to go to when targeting reds. Im sure in those same Oyster spots there are a share of reds also but as fishing goes its a matter of luck, and of the course the fish. No bitie no catchie. Just be greatful you have gotten ur share of the drum cuz im sure thats way better than the novice angler. Most people can only catch a buzz and a tan!! Not sure if u've tried the lemon rig before but i have caught my share from the jetties using that technique and of course many other places. I use that technique with shrimp here at area lakes and catch 20 or more large reds in 1 night doing the same. Also Redfish leaders with mullet usually always do the trick, if they are there they usually will take anything u throw at them, i've caught them with just the hook ( in the mouth )!!!!! |

| I usually use dead mullet with the heads pinched off, they ooze that way and it seems the reds love um. The port A jetties are good, I like the North better than the south. My favorite jetty in the world is the masfield jetties, pins side of the jetties both channel and surf...............but good god what a drive. Get a jetty map that shows the spurs, depending on current you'll know what side to fish. You can also take a boat over them and mark structure on a gps using the depth finder so when you go back without the boat you'll know where the structure is. Therein lies the secret. BC. |

The big reds love cut skipjack like you would not believe. Almost everytime the skips run through our spot, we catch a few, then immediately rig them up on 8-0 or better circle hooks, and put it back out. A red will find it quick. Good way to catch small shark too. _________________ GOBZA!!!

| My journal show 59 oversize Reds for 2005... Biggest 52" at the south jetty last fall... I find that the best bait depends on the season... Mullet, shrimp or cutbait in the summer, Sealice and crab or very large shrimp in the winter... I'm up to 19 this year already... By the way I never fish from a boat... Jetties, piers or wade... |

| If you want to know some tried and true secrets of catching reds you ought to give Billy Sandifer a call. You will have a good time and learn a whole bunch of stuff. He can probably catch a red in a puddle on the side of the road after a good rain. In my book it is money well spent. |

Depends on how far up the coast you are but Sea Rim is by far the best spot for bull reds year around on the Texas Coast. Good friend today landed five bull reds in a few hours. I fish the High Island area most often. My average is 362 bull reds a year, some years more others less. Last year was a good year with me landing just over 400 bull reds. Had a few weekends with 50+. So far this year I am hurting on the average due to the wind.
The MOB also produces bull reds year around. Have a friend from Georgia fishing the area all this week and they are cathcing a few bull reds each day.
Texa City Dike is hit and miss most of the year. You can get into bull reds during the middle of the summer on the dike. But they are not as populated as off the beach.
The North Galveston jetty is good most of the year. But the reds will go away when the water clears. |

Where can I find one of these "jetty maps" you mentioned? Thanks in advance! |

Great advice, folks!
And Jolly Roger, man oh man! ..... I wish I could fish as often as you do! ...Over 400 Reds? ..... I thought Oscar was the drum god!!!! .....
Thank you for the help....By the way, I slipped the other day and mentioned my secret drum hole.....It turns out that TPWD released a STAR tourney redfish in the very same place....A biologist emailed me and said it probably wouldn't travel more than a mile from its release site........
Looks like you don't need the 500 bucks to put me on a red....but I'd sure let you take me out in my coming boat and new truck! |
