Hope to see you all and to hear your comments at the next Watershore and Beach Advisory Coommittee meeting this Thursday, March 6, at 5:30 pm in the City Council's conference room beside the chambers.

Roses to Beth Wilson's coverage of the City Council's refinancing of the Packery TIF fund. Thorns to the city staff for not revealing its plan for what the fund has yet to build -- the Packery beach parks and associated improved parking -- and for not predicting when construction begins.
By the end of this year, the staff predicts the already performing-better-than-predicted TIF fund will add $3 million to the $1.5 million which the refinancing frees up from a former reserve, yet only that $1.5 million is proposed for the un-built amenities. Why so little?
The TIF fund would be performing even better if the amenities were already constructed, since that is the theory behind TIFs: build the parks and taxable values within the TIF zone increase. The city also missed a deadline, set for the completion of Packery's dredging, for submitting the plans called for in the lease of the state land on which the parks would lie. Why the delay?
There's even a Fall 2007 draft drawing being reviewed by the Beach Advisory Committee, but it lacks the parking and most of the recreational facilities promised the TIF voters in April 2001, and neither the staff nor the council members would address that draft. Why the secrecy?
Show the voters the draft plans now so they can tell their Council representatives if they're too little and too late.

Your lone reply, to the identical post on Nick's board as well as to this one, illustrates why I think we're not getting the support from our elected representatives. When Beth Wilson's Packery funding article came out last week, what appeared in the LTTE was also the lone comment on the blog attached to her article. The blog attached to yesterday's LTTEs has had, as of this posting, 30 comments, none of which were in reply to the well-worn Packery LTTE.
How can we expect our press, much less our representatives, to take an interest in a subject for which so few people have shown an interest? To them, it means that's a subject which won't sell newspapers nor get them re-elected, so they'll naturally concentrate on something else.
If no one takes the time to comment to the newspaper or City Council, or to show up at the public meetings calling for action, it stands to reason there will be no action. If anyone's going to complain, it better be when it counts. START SQUEAKING, PEOPLE _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

Well, I don't live in Corpus, thank god, but people there are going to do what they want regardless. To me there is no doubt that many things about the whole TIF and Packery project have been "illegal". The $900,000 parking lot built on donated land, that sure was a sweet deal for someone. Those from the city level all the way to the state level who have the authority to investigate this will not, to much money involved, to many good ole boys involved. We live in a society where money wins, doing what's right loses. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

Today's Watershore & Beach meeting has been cancelled due to weather and will be rescheduled some evening next week. Seems to me the weather has passed, but who am I to question?
Please spread the word to anyone else who was planning to make public comment,
