I don't mean to be short, but I'm not trying to hide anything or mislead anyone. It's all there with links to letters from those on both sides of the issue.
juanpescado provided links to enough information to make it abundantly clear as to what the cause is.
Anyone that fills out the form supports getting this pass opened.
Beyond putting your name on the list, theres nothing more you need to do. There is another environmental assessment that is about to take place and I want to turn in the signatures with the assessment. We're closer than we've ever been to getting this done and with some support, it will happen.
If you don't support the dredging of Cedar Bayou, don't sign it. I won't criticize your position, and would appreciate the same respect. |

If that petition has shown up in any of the links so far, please take the time to point out its location.
Look, many of the links already provided show support by people I know and trust for opening Vinson's Slough and Cedar Bayou, and there are a lot of technical details there as well so I can draw my own conclusions. Via one of those links, I also read my old office's comments last summer on the permit application, so I know the USFWS and its sister agencies had some valid concerns with the potential adverse impacts intrinsic to that original project design and location. Maybe that's all been addressed in revisions to the application not made public since last summer. So, giving the project the benefit of the doubt, let's assume it gets the go-ahead from the state and the Corps and that my position about the reopening is generally supportive. My bottom line before signing the petition remains the same: show it to me first. That's not a criticism of anyone's position, just common practice, so don't take offense.
Let's cut to the chase. Tyler, please just post a copy of the petition on this thread so hundreds won't continue to be embarrassed to admit they never read what they signed. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

It would be great to get the actual petition or clarification if in fact that page where we are supposed to sign IS the petition. Usually they are more formal than just that page.
Thanks!

Jeff
Thanks for posting this very worthy cause. Jonny this is a legit deal. Fishing stinks here when the passes are closed. The lakes are being lost on St. Jo Island at an alarming rate. Lynn Edwards, Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Coast and Harbor Engineering have worked very hard to get the job done. We have helped as much as we could with the process along the way to remove "obstacles " holding back the project. We need everyone to sign off as there will be a new permit application being submitted in the near future.
I signed the petetion do you show me on the list?

As it reads on the petition.
| Code: | Most of you are very familiar of the effort to open the Cedar Bayou and Vinson Slough channels over the past few years, in the latest effort the very agencies that are entrusted to protect our resources, have let anglers and the citizens of Texas down..
To date we have lost over 22,000 acres of wetlands that numerous species rely on for survival. Those wetlands act as nurseries to many different species and without them, they simply won't be around for future generations. Important migration paths are closing leaving fish, crabs, shrimp and other species to find alternative routes in shipping channels twenty miles or more away. This is simply unacceptable and it's time for change.
I think Dr. Larry McKinney said it best in a issue of the Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine July 2002.
"The passes are critical to fisheries of all kinds. The mixing of fresh water from river inflows with sea water entering the bays and estuaries though the passes creates differences in salinity levels that are necessary for completion of the life cycle of 90% of our recreational and commercially important fish. If you put a cork in the bottle and the developing fish can't get into and out of the bays, they can't complete their life cycle."
I concur with Dr. McKinney, now is the time to make it happen. By signing the petition your voice will be heard, those agencies that continue to stonewall this effort will hear loud and clear where the anglers, and citizens of Texas stand on this important issue. |
If the agencies that opposed the dredging raised valid concerns or not is a matter of opinion, and the links to their letters are right there on the site for people to form their own.
I'll admit it's not the most organized site, and could even look better. But I'm really not sure what more you want. As I stated on another site, and was posted here a few threads back, I'm just an average guy that has took the time to learn the history on this pass and it's closure, and want to contribute to the effort to get it opened.
I spend a lot of time in that area and before it closed this last time, I personally witnessed the improvement in fishing, and this summer as it slowed to a trickle, I saw with my own eyes the number of crabs passing through there.
The best that can happen is thousands of acres of wetlands will be restored, and numerous species will once again migrate in and out of our bays as they should.
The worst? Private land owners might have to build a seawall to prevent erosion, and one family will have less grazing land for their cattle.
If you can suggest a better form to use for an online petition, I welcome the suggestion.
Also, I apologize if this is creating any unrest for the moderators or owners, this is my last post on the matter. |

Thanks to all of you - texasflats, Tyler, and Jim - for at last putting the spotlight on what the petition is. When I finish another obligation this morning, I'll try to compose pms outlining suggested improvements to the petition. Whether you decide to adopt them depends on how correctly I am guessing some things about the target and methods. Meanwhile, may I suggest someone add "PETITION" as a heading for the appropriate paragraphs on the website?
Jim, as you and I have been over the reopening situation several times in the past, I think you understand my position has always been supportive of that objective. I've been trying with limited success to help make the petition drive support the objective better. Your comment that "there will be a new permit application being submitted in the near future" tells me there's still time to rewrite the old petition or generate a new one. One additional thing about a new application is that it gives us all an opportunity to request the Corps to put everyone on the mailing list (a copy of the revised permit application should appear on the Corps' website; I'll try to post a link to that when it does), to request a public hearing, to provide written comments, and even, as I say, to circulate another petition.
Tyler, I don't know anything about how to design an online petition, just the old-fashioned kind, but I'm sure your expertise includes the skills required. Hope you can aid us on that after we've sliced and diced my ideas for the outline. Jim, get me a copy of the new application ASAP; it may make a difference in how the petition should be (re)written, and I may have some suggestions on the details of the application itself to assist in its appeal to the reviewing agencies. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!
