Going Surf fishing for the first time with a neighbor - can I catch anything on my regular fishing gear (LM stuff, 20# test) in the surf or will I have to get all decked out with big reels ans 50lb test? _________________ Happy Hook'n

Sure you just need the big stuff if you are going to chunk bigger baits to catch Sharks and Bull Reds. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

bay rods are great for the surf if you plan on targeting trout, whiting, spanish, or any other smaller surf fish, but, like tyler said, you'll need bigger gear if going for sharks or bull reds. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Anybody got advice?
Do's/ Don't's (don't pet the alligators,,etc.)
Reports??
Bait??
Don't know what I'm doing, just going to buy my first surf rod/reel today, going to Big Shell with my Neighbor and fishing friday night- stop by, we are in a green Toy - should be a good laugh.
Oh, what # test is good? I can't seem to tie the 50# very well. _________________ Happy Hook'n

You're coming off a full moon with big tide swings, 4 foot seas, and NE winds. Get back near the dunes at night and watch the tides.....sometimes the water comes way up in those conditions. _________________ The next epic report is currently in the past. |

Not really without a boat or a long walk. You can however fish Yarborough if you have a 4x4. |

| I got a sea spinning combo at Academy on sale $35, 1 year fishing license $45, throw net $19, assorted tackle; hooks, sinkers, wire leaders, wire jigs, line, minnow bucket, etc. to target reds, trout, and spanish macs. Along with them come the big jacks. I got 25 lb line on a medium action 10’ rod. Every second jack, discard leaders and jigs and sharpen hooks. Have to use wire leaders now. Smacks are hitting the top of the jigs and cutting them off. Don’t buy a big box of hooks. They will rust. I use regular 4/0 eagle claw because they look the strongest. These fish will often bend the hook. Keep fresh bait on the hook. Bait is everywhere. You can catch 3 dozen at a time right now. Only keep the best 6 or 8 in the bucket. There’s weed in the surf. You can’t use a rod holder except to hold the bait. You have to get out in the surf to dodge the weed. Go out until right before a wave knocks off your hat and sunglasses or over the sand bar and let her rip. If you have bait in the water before sun up, you will catch fish. Smacks come in around 2 or 3 o;clock. Keep the line tight and may your minnow bucket never hit you on the shin. |
