on padre island near PINS they are drilling for oil . i thought that people couldn't drill for oil on the island.

does anybody have comments or explanations on this?

There are many wells producing oil and natural gas on the barrier island. There are no restrictions that I know of. Its much more expensive due to environmental permitting and logistics, but its done all the time. I believe there are laws in Texas that allow all mineral owners to develop the minerals on their properties no matter where those properties may be.

I personally don't care where they drill for oil as long as they dont make a mess, Americans need jobs and i need cheaper gas for my 4x4 so i can drive more and waste more fuel like a good American.Next we as a country should go down ank kick Hugo's butt and take his oil fields and sell them gas back for 3 bucs a gal. and so on. Its either that or we need to start growing lots of corn. Now back to fishing........

It has been done for a while, they take extra care because of all the crazy tree huggers, who left a huge pile of trash and other items behind when they protested for several days out there a couple of years ago, they can drill for oil today and not destroy the enviornment when they want to or have to. And yes I like to keep our natural resources clean and use them properly but God put them here for us.

Between the State and Feds, there are at least five regulatory agencies that keep an eye on any oil field related activity in and around the coast. Not counting the tree hugger groups. I bet there is at least one inspection every other day at any drilling rig on land or bay and once a month on existing production. And you can bet the fines are pretty stiff for any violations when found.

Very true FlakMan on gas prices. However, watch those natural gas prices in a month or two when the Northern states start getting colder. If the winter is a bad one, fuel gas will jump. Just like gasoline does in the summer..Thats when the production companys hope to make up for any revenue loss.

Yes, indeed. Being in the oilfield service industry, I can assure you that the operator and the drilling contractor both are going to extreme means to prevent, not just minimize, but prevent any environmental impact. The biggest impact the rig will have, unless some unforeseen accident occurs, is the noise and light "pollution." In addition to all the federal and state regulatory agencies, they will be closely monitored by the tree hugger groups, the media, and, of course, the general public. It would be a PR nightmare for the operator to drill in the manner we did 30 years ago. It is funny, though, to hear that the tree huggers left a bunch of trash behind. They need to put their money where their mouths are!!

Don't know where mastergunner's bit of slander came from, but if it was attached to the name of a particular NGO I expect with the lawyers it packs he'd be on the way to poverty by now. It's easy to snipe and start rumors, but not always wise without proof.

Having been both a mudlogger and an agency biologist professionally and still leaning very much on the side of the trees, I can swear that both the drilling industry and the environmental organizations have changed dramatically for the better since the 70's. Both sides have image problems, though, and it doesn't help when people still tend to believe the worst unsupported gossip about one entity and then apply it to all.

Shoot some pictures and produce them here; I'll be glad to help nail the enviros, rig operators, tourists, loosely-organized fishing tournaments and any other trashy groups who mess with the beach. Any contributing to giving the beaches a bad name deserve to be made examples. The innocent don't have to be smeared along with the guilty, though.

It's the politicians in Florida, not the NGOs, we can blame for the way the offshore drilling rules aren't applied equally in the GOM. Something to do with the dynastic background, a sort of droit du seigneur where only those with the right connections can screw the environment.

Speaking of moaning and whining, look at Nick's board for such about the meeting on shark management. It ran to about 3 pages of teeth grinding and knuckle dragging, but when I asked if anybody actually went to the meeting and could report the outcome, I got attacked.

It's just about as bad on the BHP improvements thing, where only a fraction of the posters have made constructive suggestions and even fewer showed up for the meetings. Now even those who gave excuses on this board for not coming to the meetings because the time and place were inconvenient have refused to post what WOULD make their attendance possible.

NOW you can whine and moan some more, but try to support your positions with more specific proof and less broad name-calling.
