I assume all the forage this time of year is deeper and not hiding in the grassy edges, because the reds have pretty much disappeared from the grasses and are staying out of sight. Thirteen miles of shorelines on Saturday morning gave me only two shots at redfish. The first one showed up 15 feet from me, and I buggered the cast and landed 4" from the fish's face as he pushed through the grass. He paused, and I eased the bait toward the water. It hung on the grass and bent a larger stem, which sent the fish darting off into deeper water. It happens, so I kept looking.
The next fish was a few miles farther along, and he also showed up near the kayak. I saw him crawl up and into the grass, then fall back out of view as I closed the distance. I sat still and waited, and after a few seconds I caught a glimpse of the top of his back. The bait landed close and the fish did a quick circle, half startled and half curious. I inched the bait about six inches ahead and he came six inches closer. I did it again and so did he... I hesitated a few seconds and gave it a faint twitch. He pounced like a cat on a mouse and I set the hook on a solid red. That was all the visible activity I found on a long paddle covering a LOT of shorelines. I did manage to catch half a dozen trout by trolling baits behind the kayak while working shorelines in the Aransas river.
Since the bait all seems to be in deeper water keeping the reds out of sight for the moment, I think this weekend will be a good time to do some chores out at the property. There is some mowing and coyote/racoon thinning that needs to take place now that the turkeys are sitting on eggs.

Glenn: I launched my skiff at Bayside(ramp is OK--hasn't silted in--YET)went West to the cut into the marsh lake. Tide was flowing out. Fished a few minutes with live shrimp. Couple hardheads. Went to the marsh drain. Ran my jack plate up and went all the way to the lagoon. NADA. Fished on the way back out. Didn't mark any fish on my sounded at all. Caught a couple more hardheads & a puppy drum. Went back to the cut & the tide was flowing in. One puppy drum, & a short Trout. I motored over to the pilings by the bridge. One barely keeper trout. UNCLE! After last week's rains, I hoped the Aransas River would have been productive.
Sunday. I launched the Viking at the AP Aquatic Center. Got on the flats, and 3rd cast, a 28" Red! He fought & wrapped around my anchor line. Got my net under it, but a big jerk, broke the line and it jumped out of the net. Fourth cast, got a 21" Red in the boat. That was it. Four hours later, I was leaving & caught a 15" flounder. I released it, but it went to the bottom, white side up. I
scooped it up & cleaned it. Not worth killing a fish, but I might as well nibble on it, as a crab.
Like you, I don't know where there big fish are, but I know where they weren't. My neighbor fished Dagger Point islets & got lots of short Reds & one over slot.
Thanks for your report. TexasJim _________________ TexasJim

For that I need two things: winds to come down, and my work to give me a chance to chase the fish. I'm watching for windows... |
