Last week I went exploring a new stretch of the Nueces river to see if any white bass were around yet. They were not, but I did notice a familiar shape ahead on the shoreline at one point. As I got closer it was not a redfish, but a buffalo with its back exposed and feeding along the bank. I brought out the only weapon aboard, the little 2wt fly rod, and began figuring out what it would take to convince one of these fish to eat a fly. Evidently they are pretty spooky and I only had a couple of shots at each fish, but with about 30 of them that I encountered, it was bound to work out once or twice. Thankfully it did - twice. The first fish was about 4 pounds and a nice workout for the tiny reel. The second fish was heavier and for a while I wasn't sure the tackle would hold up. Thankfully the fish avoided logs and hang-ups, and it also came aboard for a short piece of video proof. I got out the phone and shot some video of the buffalo backs and it was surprising to me how much they behaved like shallow feeding reds (except for the aggressive feeding of redfish). I guess in the future I will always take my time on the river and diligently search the banks ahead for these freshwater reds. Very Happy

I launched at the 59 bridge, and no there is not enough water for any kind of powerboat. Kayaks don't need much, and when I got a couple of miles down the river it got much nicer.
