Went out at first light this morning looking for a few redfish to keep - wife's family reunion coming up, so needed some fish to fry. Boat's in the shop, so kayak was the only option.
Great paddle out, nice sunrise, almost dead calm so an easy paddle, and not too hot (yet). Went a little over a mile to our regular spot (not exactly a 2 minute honey hole) and ended up with an 18" and a 19". Moved down the shoreline a little, and got nothing. By then it was 8:30am and most of the signs of life in the water had gone away. I decided to move out to slightly deeper water and just contemplate life, so I did so, with fishing really an afterthought at this point as I figured the bite had already died and I wasn't going to catch anything more.
Fortunately, I was wrong. Started catching fish one after the other. The 2nd fish I caught, I thought my drag was either broken or I had somehow loosened it and not noticed it, as there was no way the fish was big enough to be taking drag like it was. My arm actually got tired just hanging on to the rod and watching that thing do loops around my kayak between 50-100 yards out. It finally tired out, and turned out to be a 33 incher. Was glad to catch and release that fish, and was also glad my drag wasn't busted - it was doing what it was supposed to do.
Ended up catching 6 keepers/oversized there and came home with my 3 fish limit, 22", 24", and 27". Wind actually ended up being from the NE switching more to the E as I was paddling back in. Actually saw 2 or 3 schools in the really shallow marsh going back to the truck, and I couldn't help myself but to cast to them, but they were extremely spooky and my Down South lure in Key Lime just wasn't to their liking. Maybe next time.
All in all a fantastic morning. |

Awesome report. I can only imagine the 33 inch giving you a ride. I have a hard enough time getting a three pound largemouth into my kayak. |
