look on google earth and nuecescad and you'll see that some guy owns the end of Whiteley channel, which includes some boathouses and two boat ramps at the end of it...not sure if he has any plans other than to enjoy his very own personal double boat ramp and ample parking behind a tall fence

Oh!, OK, yeah, I just moved out of the town homes next door where I ran the HOA for three years.
The previous owner, the older gentlemen who rode around on a scooter was a nice guy.
They sold it probably two yrs ago when his wife got real sick.
The gentleman who lives in it now, daughter and family live across the street there on Whiteley.
I tried to get to know them, speaking about joint projects like the dividing fences etc, but they were pretty standoffish, at least the daughter was.
Not at all surprised that their going to do something with that property. It's nice!
Ida bought it myself if I could pull together those kind of funds...

Actually, Stan launched on the Island, had a "courtesy sticker" from friends. At least that is what he told me

I saw Sea Tow post a video on the book of faces hinting at a new location for their boats? Guess that means they jumper ship from Bluff Landing.

I know at one time it was Wes Beck that owned the ramp at the end of Whitley, but it has changed hands a few times since he sold in in the early 2000's.

Thanks for the update Becky. Glad to hear that there is pushback. No public ramp in the Bluff would be a PITA, especially for my wife or son if they had to drive the truck & trailer to Billings or Marker 37 to launch or pickup from Tropic Isles.

P.S.

Here is an email I sent to District 4 Councilman Suckley a few minutes ago.

Hello Councilman Suckley,

I am writing today to express my concern about news that has surfaced concerning the potential future of the lone public boat ramp in Flour Bluff, specifically located at Bluff Landing Marina.

My wife and I own a home at XXXX Samoa in the Tropic Isles subdivision. We've owed the home for about 15 years and enjoy our visits to Flour Bluff when schedules allow. During this time we have routinely used the boat ramp a Bluff Landing Marina due to its convenience to the neighborhood and also because it is in reasonably good shape. As you are aware, the marina ownership has changed hands over the years and I remember when the cost to launch there was $5, then $10, and most recently $20. In spite of the cost it remained our "go to" launch.

Should the ramp be closed for public use, I have a major concern how it will affect the businesses at that end of Flour Bluff (Mimi & Papa's Restaurant, Sea Tow, etc.), as well as the guide services that patronize the marina and launch. Also, it would effectively shut down the last remaining launch in Flour Bluff open to the public. And make no mistake about it, it is essentially a neighborhood boat ramp that has served the residents of Tropic Isles and surrounding neighborhoods for decades.

While I do support the rights of property owners to do as they legally wish on their property and that money is always the baseline for decisions like this, it is also my duty as a Tropic Isles homeowner to share my concern with you. To think that Flour Bluff, a community that is deeply engrained in recreational fishing and boating, may not have boat launch that is accessible to the public is concerning. Billings or Marker 37 would be the closest options.

I ask that you please do all in your power, with the help of your fellow councilpersons, to seek a solution so that Flour Bluff residents can utilize a boat ramp in our community.

Thank you for your consideration and please do not hesitate to contact me for additional information or if you have any questions.

Regards,
Sean...

Thanks Becky. Lots of emotion in my letter, not much factual substance.

Councilman Suckley replied within an hour or so of receiving the email. Certainly refreshing to get a personal, timely response from an elected official, kudos to him.

Here is the meat of his response. Dimmit would be better than nothing.

I am aware of the challenges that Mr. Hawkins’s actions creates for Flour Bluff. I initiated a meeting with our Public Works Department this past Friday for them to research the boat ramp and specifically the location and control thereof. I hope to have more information regarding that in the coming weeks.

When I got on Council in early 2023, I started working with Parks & Rec staff in March (2023) to evaluate options for Flour Bluff to get a city owned boat launch for the public. I don’t know if you have seen the Bond 2024 proposal going in front of voters in November, but it includes money for design of a launch facility over next to Dimmit Pier in Flour Bluff. Dimmit Pier is in front a city waste water treatment facility and there are several acres of property there that could be repurposed for this use.

I am hopeful that the community is supportive in November of Bond 2024 so that we can move towards making a public boat ramp in Flour Bluff a reality.

TPWD is flush with cash for new state parks etc, maybe they could pony up some matching funds for a boat launch/parking area.

Is Dimmit going to have armed security?
Don't think I'd be very comfortable that things won't get broken into over there?

Years ago, TPWD erased all the 'State Owned' launches, and gave them to whatever County they were located. Maintenance costs just ate them up. Don't look for that to change anytime soon..... Cool

Dan is a good guy. Known him for many, many years. He's a solid Council Member for District 4. But, like pointed out above, the Dimmit location isn't the best location out there. Granted, it's better than not having anything, but it's a crap shoot for security - kinda like rolling the bones for a launch at Wilson's Cut. Shocked

IMS launched at C&W's for years with his "Flat Bottomed Girl" the times that I fished with him...I didn't fish with him after he got the Majek (that he had issues with)...and yes, a "friend" got him a PIPOA sticker and that's where he launched in the last year...

yes, I worked with the city to get the kayak launch built there and I have been working with Parks and Recs for about 5 years to get that boat ramp at dimmit...Dan has been a great proponent to get it on the Bond cycle as well..

problem is that the boat ramp wouldn't be constructed for another few years...doesn't help us now

TPWD has two programs, the Boating Access Grant (BAG) and Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) that provides matching money for new boat ramps, up to $500,000....we used that when we rebuilt the Clems and Billings boat ramps...

they want you to have the engineering and permitting done up front though...
