While I'm all for restoration projects, I'm concerned this will be used to implement closure areas we likely will never get back?

Do you see it coming ???
They need projects to allow them to receive government subsidies and big grants to make payroll.
What color will the new buoys be to hold back boats from our fishing grounds be ?
Any one wants to take bets on this happening ?? |

| I am glad they are going to enhance Baffin Bay. It looks like they are going to put some artificial substrate out to see how well it is colonized. The part I was confused about is I thought I understood the article to say they were going to see if the new substrate was colonized by serpulid worms. I thought those serpulid worms that formed rocks were prehistoric and all gone? Are they still present in Baffin Bay? |

Like you Shalor, I recall from previous information published about Baffin Bay the worms were reportedly no longer existent, at least in BB, but the statement references there being worms presently, but evidently very few. This is all the more reason I'm encouraged to learn of the effort and hopeful they are successful in enhancing Baffin Bay's failing ecology. I'm sure the effort could be a discomfort to those of us fishing BB, but the health of the resource is much more important then our having unlimited access to our "spot". |

just curious, what are YOU doing to help restore degraded ecosystems?
and yeah, I"ll take your bet that CCA's goal isn't to limit fishing access....

Looks like a graduate student study of the colonization of worms on various substrates. Dumping huge limestone blocks in various locations (or whatever substrate works best) may serve as habitat enhancement whether worms get on board or not.

Whoa!!!! Looks like the bag limit on Serpulid worms is going to get cut back to three.
A good start to getting Baffin Bay back into shape is get rid of all the dams the ranchers built on the creeks for stock ponds. Let's see some more fresh water flowing into Baffin like back in the day.

| I understand your concern speckled.trout, but it seems once a lake is full the creek continues to flow, as it originally did? That is, as long as the lake is not used for irrigation purposes. I think the limited fresh water is more a result of the ARID climate we have in this area. |

Doesn't work like that. Seems after the first one fills up, the water in the creek runs to the next stock pond on the next ranch and then to the next. There isn't just one stock pond on a creek and the creek runs through more than one ranch. You are correct the limited fresh water is a arid climate so let Baffin get it's share.

Texas water rights laws would have to be completely re-written to take water rights away from property owners. If it's on you land, creek, river, or whatever, and you own both shores, it's yours. NO ONE can take it from you. Have to deal directly with the land owners to play nice. And in a drought, they won't. And don't have to. Nothing the State can do about it.

ehh, not so much...
CC owns most of the Nueces watershed, even here where I am...
only older dams that were granfathered in are allowed
all sorts of permits required to pump rivers... if even granted
